Argylle flops with soft box office debut

Argylle, the spy-themed action comedy with a star-studded cast, has underperformed with a weak box office debut.

As reported by Variety, Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn's latest film has opened to box office receipts of just $18 million in its opening weekend in North America.

The publication states that the film's production cost an estimated $200 million and, thanks to marketing costs, would need to make $500 million to break even.

Although the film opened in first place at the box office, Variety's report states that this is due to no other new films of note releasing against it.

When international figures are added, Argylle's global opening weekend box office is $35 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Argylle is the latest of Apple's movies to release in cinemas before making its streaming debut, and has had similar openings to Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon.

It is the most widely-aimed of the tech giant's three recent movies, however, due to big-name stars like Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa, its broad subject matter, and 12A age rating.

Reviews for the film have not been great, landing filmmaker Matthew Vaughn his lowest score on Rotten Tomatoes to date.

Digital Spy's own review reads: "The story becomes convoluted rather than original. Classic spy tropes like red herrings and disguises are rolled out, but without anything that makes them interesting.

"And with the movie clocking over two hours' long, you'll be wishing that there was at least one fewer twist to cut down the runtime...

"Even though the movie is being released first in cinemas, it's more likely to find a better home when it streams on Apple TV+ as a diverting Friday night watch."

Argylle is available to watch in cinemas now and will later stream on Apple TV+.
