Area Roundup: Vero Beach beach volleyball falls at state, Centennial's Brereton pitches perfect game

Vero Beach's trip to the state capital ended in the state quarterfinal round against the one team that's had its number this year. The Indians were eliminated after falling 3-1 against St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday from the Florida State University Beach Volleyball Courts in Tallahassee.

The Raiders, seeded fourth in the state bracket, previously defeated No. 5 Vero Beach by a 4-1 margin exactly one month earlier on April 11.

The Indians' lone victory Saturday came from its No. 2 pairing as Ella Minton and Ara Sanchez earned a 2-0 victory. However, St. Lucie Aquinas finished off its opponent with sweeps at the third, fourth and fifth pairings.

On the previous day, Vero Beach advanced following a 3-0 victory over Winter Haven. There, Minton and Sanchez were victorious, as were the No. 1 duo of Ava Lilliquist and Cora Darling and No. 4 pairing of Marley Massey and Kaleigh Becton.

Vero Beach finishes the season with victories in 18 of 20 matches.

Baseball

Region 3-7A semifinals

No. 2 Vero Beach (23-4) 15, No. 6 Wellington 0 (F/4): A nine-run explosion in the bottom of the first carried the Indians to the regional final. They followed that with a run in the second and five more in the third against the Wolverines.

Vero Beach totaled 11 hits among eight players, with Chase Wilson, Caleb Wood and Jordan Tomas each collecting. The trio also combined for 10 RBIs, as Wilson led the way with five, Wood platting three and Tomas with two runs driven in. Wilson and Wood each had a double.

Elsewhere, Jace Romans was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. Finley also scored three times as the senior had a hit and a stolen base.

Meanwhile the Wolverine bats were shut down by Sebastian Dimitroff. The sophomore allowed a hit and a walk with four strikeouts through four shutout innings.

The Indians will play in their first regional final since 2019, looking to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 2003. They play host to No. 4 Harmony at 7 p.m. Monday.

Thursday

Softball

Region 4-5A quarterfinals

No. 7 Pembroke Pines Charter 6, No. 2 South Fork 2: The Bulldogs' hopes of repeating as regional champs ended at home in the quarterfinal round at the hands of the Jaguars.

After Pembroke Pines Charter scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 victory, South Fork scored twice in the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit. The visitors immediately answered with two more runs in the sixth.

Highlighted by winning a district title, the Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-7 record.

No. 3 Sebring (14-8) 12, No. 6 Sebastian River (13-14) 1 (F/5): The Sharks were held to five hits during a season-ending road loss to the Blue Streaks, who put up seven runs in the first inning.

Contributing a triple, Jazmin Hunt was one of five players to record a hit for the visitors. She scored in the fourth thanks to an RBI from Kiera Carow.

Sebastian River finishes with a 13-14 record after dropping four of its last five games. The team lost its last three games by a combined 32-4.

Region 3-7A

No. 3 St. Lucie West Centennial (20-7) 15, No. 6 Harmony (11-11) 0: The Eagles reached the 20-win mark after blasting past the Longhorns at home.

Centennial was held scoreless through the first two innings, delivered an avalanche in the third, crossing home plate 11 times. The hosts finished off the game with a four-run fourth.

Hailey Brereton and Jaelyn Cooke each hit home runs for the Eagles. Cooke walked twice, scored three times and poured in five RBIs. Brereton finished a triple short of the cycle, finishing with four RBIs and three runs scored. Each player recorded a stolen base.

Brereton was also the pitcher on the mound, as for the second consecutive year the junior pitcher tossed a perfect game in a regional quarterfinal. Throwing 50 possession, the junior recorded all 12 of her outs via strikeout.

Elsewhere, Myrna Pratt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Each hitting a double, Keyhara Alleyne and Carmela Baker had two hits apiece.

Centennial plays in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at No. 2 Palm Beach Gardens.
