Area baseball, softball teams participating in Stop DWI Classic at Hamilton College

CLINTON - Ten schools from Section III's Tri-Valley League and Center State Conference will be the participants this weekend in the second Oneida County Stop DWI Baseball and Softball Classic at Hamilton College.

Baseball and softball teams from Rome Free Academy and Utica's Thomas R. Proctor High School will square off Friday in the event's opening games at 4:30 p.m.

Rome Free Academy is 8-5 in softball with back-to-back wins after snapping a four-game losing streak while Proctor is 3-11. Rome Free Academy defeated Proctor 13-5 in Rome in April.

The Proctor baseball team is 11-2 with a 10-game winning streak after sophomore Josh Martinez pitched a no-hitter Wednesday in a 6-0 victory at Oneida. Rome Free Academy is 8-5 this spring with wins in its last three games. Friday's meeting will be the first of two during the regular season for the teams who are scheduled to play a rescheduled game in Rome Wednesday.

Saturday's schedule features tripleheaders on both fields, starting and ending with two more paired matchups. Westmoreland and Oriskany play at 9 a.m., and New Hartford takes on Utica-Notre Dame at 3 p.m. in both sports. At noon, Holland Patent and Clinton square off in baseball while Herkimer meets Mt. Markham in softball.

Westmoreland baseball is 3-11 to start the season while Oriskany (9-1) is one of six teams in the section with no more than one loss; Oriskany won 12-8 at Westmoreland May 1. In softball, Oriskany is 10-2 and Westmoreland is 8-3 with a 16-8 victory at home when the teams met to start the season on April Fool's Day.

New Hartford and Notre Dame play in different divisions in the Tri-Valley League and are two parts of a strong softball group; New Hartford in 10-4 competing in the Colonial Division with Whitesboro (11-2) and Rome Free Academy while Notre Dame is 8-3 in a Pionee Division that includes Camden (11-1) and Central Valley Academy (8-4).

New Hartford is 9-3 in baseball after having a seven-game win streak snapped this week. Notre Dame is 1-12, having beaten Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Tuesday.

The Herkimer softball squad is 10-3 on a three-game win streak while Mt. Markham is 8-5; the teams postponed an earlier meeting in West Winfield.

Holland Patent is 5-9 and Clinton 7-3 so far in the baseball season. This is the one scheduled meeting for the teams.

The Stop DWI Classic was contested as a baseball event for a decade before the addition of softball last year.

Admission to the games is free both days with educational presentations by the Oneida County Health Department, the Center for Family Life and Recovery, Helio Health, the Oneida County Sheriff's Department, the New York State Police, and New York's Department of Transportation.
