Apple Cinemas, newly enhanced movie theater in White Plains, announces opening date

Summer movie season is upon us and Apple Cinemas, a northeastern movie theater chain with locations in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Connecticut, will open just in time for you to see your favorite blockbuster.

Opening day for the new state-of-the-art movie theater complex — where Showcase Cinema de Lux location had been at the White Plains City Center (237 Martine Avenue) — is May 16, pending permit approvals.

Visitors to the complex will be greeted by a renovated lobby, self-serve popcorn machines, reclining seats, and a (soon-to-open) on-site restaurant, BurgerFi, which features a variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, bowls and more.

Also in the works — and planned for the end of May — is both an IMAX and Apple Cinemas Premium Large Format ACX screen featuring 4K LASER and Dolby ATMOS 360-degree immersive sound. That includes IMAX with Laser, a groundbreaking, next-generation laser projection and 12-channel sound system which delivers increased resolution, sharper and brighter images.

The theater is the second Apple Cinemas location to open in New York state after Pittsford and joins 11 existing theaters in the northeast along with several more in development.

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach is among those who are excited. "When Showcase pulled out, our full focus was on bringing a new theater operator into the space," he said. "Our thriving downtown worked in our favor creating a great deal of interest in the theater industry. I am pleased to welcome Apple Cinemas to our community. Apple has made significant investments in upgrading the facilities and enhancing the ticket holder experience.

"This is an exciting new chapter in the long history of entertainment in White Plains."

Added Jennifer Furioli, executive director of the Downtown White Plains Business Improvement District: “We’re pleased the movies are returning to downtown White Plains and that that the theater, the owners of City Center and the City of White Plains were able to work together so quickly to bring film back into the heart of our commercial center."
