Apparel contractor to lay off 217

Oct. 30—HIGH POINT — The third-party vendor that operates the Hanesbrands apparel distribution center in High Point plans to lay off 217 workers there by the end of the year.

National Distribution Centers LLC will end its presence at 4190 Eagle Hill Drive because its customer contract for the site was terminated, according to a letter dated Oct. 13 from the company to state and local officials as part of a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.

The contract is with Hanesbrands, and it will not be renewed after it expires at the end of the year, said Nicole Ducouer, director of corporate communications for the Winston-Salem-based apparel company.

National Distribution Centers said in the letter that it expects to lay off workers from the facility starting Dec. 17 and continuing through Dec. 31.

Hanesbrands opened at the 343,000-square-foot building in the Piedmont Centre business park in 2018, leasing the space for distribution of its Champion athleticwear brand products.

The property is owned by Universal Furniture and was previously occupied by Ralph Lauren Corp. until it left the site several years ago to consolidate its distribution operations at its other High Point facilities.

Ducouer said Hanesbrands would not comment on whether it will remain at 4190 Eagle Hill Drive after the National Distribution Centers LLC contract expires.
