APD: Man, 19, dies after motorcycle hits SUV on Soncy Thursday night

A 19-year-old man riding a motorcycle died after he crashed into an SUV in Amarillo Thursday night, the Amarillo Police Department (APD) said.

At about 9:28 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, Amarillo officers were sent to the scene of a major crash involving a motorcycle and a motor vehicle at Soncy Road and Bent Tree Drive, APD said. Upon officers' arrival, they found out that a 2006 Kawaski motorcycle had been heading north on Soncy at a high rate of speed, driven by Mikeal Donovan Fierro, 19. At the same time, a GMC SUV had been driving south on Soncy and was turning east into the south alley of Bent Tree.

The motorcycle struck the SUV, and Fierro died at the scene from injuries he sustained in the crash, according to APD. Randall County Justice of the Peace Joanne Garcia Flores ordered an autopsy of Fierro.

No information was given on any occupants of the SUV.

APD said speed is considered to be a factor in this crash.

The incident is being investigated by APD's Traffic Investigation Squad.
