Born Rakim Athelaston Mayers in Harlem on Oct. 3, 1988, A$AP Rocky and his sister Erika were raised with a love of hip-hop—their parents reportedly named them after the iconic rap duo Eric B. & Rakim (cute!)
Rocky started rapping when he was just 9 years old after his family moved from New York City to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Rocky's father went to prison when Rocky was 12, and his family resorted to living in shelters. A year later, Rocky's older brother was murdered. The tragedies served as motivation and the latter especially as a catalyst for his career.
"He was like the revolutionary big brother," Rocky told The Fader. "He would make me feel secure, and if it wasn't for him being able to get that confidence out of me, I wouldn't have had the balls to discover I had a talent."
He had talent, but also a day job: He turned to selling drugs to support himself until he made it as a rapper, and he moved with his mom and Erika to an Elmwood, N.J., condominium. "I needed peace of mind to be creative," he told The New York Times of his motivation to opt for suburban life. "I needed peace of mind because I was getting street money and I didn't want anybody trying to stick my family up."
In 2007, Rocky joined a group of friends and fellow emcees that eventually became the A$AP Mob, which he affectionately calls his extended family. For years, they worked and even lived together in the New Jersey condo that Rocky shared with his mom and Erika.
Rocky dropped his first music video, "Purple Swag," in July 2011, shortly after he quit selling drugs. The song went viral, but it wasn't until August when his mixtape track "Peso" leaked and aired on New York City's iconic Hot 97 radio station that he garnered mainstream attention, both for his flow and his fashion sense (the man can dress!).
