Former NFL tight end Antonio Gates never played college football before becoming one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. But his son, 2022 four-star wideout Antonio Gates Jr., will get to play football – and at one of the schools his father tried to ply his trade.

On Monday, Gates Jr. gave his verbal commitment to Michigan State University. Incidentally, Michigan State was the first school that Gates Sr. enrolled at to play college basketball.

Antonio Gates Jr. is the No. 293 overall prospect in the country, per 247Sports. He is the No. 45 wide receiver in the country and the No. 8 prospect from the state of Michigan.

The Spartans have been pretty high on Gates Jr’s radar since the early stages of his recruiting process. They were among the first to give him a scholarship offer and really ramped up their recruiting in the spring.

Gates made visits to East Lansing in April and June before giving his commitment today.

If Antonio Gates Jr. has hands anything like his father, he’s primed for success at the position.

Gates Sr. played high school football and initially wanted to play two sports at Michigan State. But after learning he couldn’t do both, he transferred to Eastern Michigan, then College of the Sequoias before picking Kent State.

Despite only playing basketball at Kent State, the San Diego Chargers took a chance on Gates Sr. as a tight end in 2003. The results were eight Pro Bowls, four All-Pro selections, a spot on the team’s 50th Anniversary Team and the 2000s All-Decade Team.

Good luck in the college game!
