Anthony Edwards spotted at Team USA table tennis match after viral challenge

Anthony Edwards is one of the emerging stars in the NBA who’s in Paris with Team USA, hoping to help the men’s basketball squad win its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal. But he’s also got his eye on another sport.

The Minnesota Timberwolves guard was in the crowd when fellow American Lily Zhang defeated Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi in table tennis on July 29. After Zhang won a point in the match, a camera captured Edwards standing and cheering.

“That's what I'm talking about,” he could be seen saying.

Edwards was on hand at the match after teammate Stephen Curry introduced him to several members of the table tennis team during the opening ceremony.

After Curry said the table tennis players would beat him 21-0, Edwards refused to believe he’d be shut out if he ever played them in a friendly match.

“I got some people talking about they’re going to beat me in ping pong 21-zero,” he said.

“I don’t believe it. I’m not having it. I’m not having it ... I’m scoring one point. One point, I’m scoring,” he continued.

Edwards and the table tennis players mentioned possibly playing, although they didn’t land on any date to do so.

Zhang is competing in her fourth Olympics and has advanced to the round of 16 for the first time. She will next play July 31 when she faces the winner of South Korea’s Shin Yu-bin and Hungary’s Georgina Póta.

“This is something I’ve wanted for so long; I’ve worked so hard for. This is the furthest I’ve had for my four Olympics,” she said after the match. “(After I won) I wanted to raise my arms, but my knees just buckled, and I fell to the floor and everything just released and I was full of emotion.”

Meanwhile, Edwards also has some faith in his abilities in the pool.

When asked by TODAY’s Craig Melvin which swimming event he would do in the Olympics, he quickly said “freestyle,” claiming he is the fastest swimmer on the men’s basketball team.

“They ain’t no swimmers,” he said.

Edwards will return to his main sport when he and the rest of the men’s basketball squad hit the court July 31 — the same day Zhang is next in action — to take on South Sudan in the team’s second game.

The basketball team opened up Olympics play with a 110-84 victory over Serbia on July 28.
