Another Whataburger in Fort Worth with old style A-frame is about to get renovated

A Whataburger in Fort Worth is the latest location to get a renovation.

The A-frame restaurant, at 2600 Hemphill St., was built in 1985, according to tax records. Construction is expected to start next week on $210,000 in an interior and exterior freshening.

The iconic Texas burger chain, with its orange and white color scheme, unveiled in 2020 a new design template for its restaurants that does away with the classic A-frame for the entire dining area, like the Hemphill location. Some older Whataburger locations in Tarrant County have already been significantly renovated or rebuilt in the new style, which retains more modest design elements of the “A”, including on Blue Mound Road in Saginaw, on North Beach Street near Airport Freeway, and on Northeast 28th Street.

The remodels “will vary based on the needs of each location, ranging from kitchen and exterior upgrades in some restaurants to major updates in others,” the company has said. But orange and white stripes are still prominent.

“Whataburger’s new restaurant designs and remodels will stay true to our unique look, just in an updated and fresh way,” said James Turcotte, senior vice president of real estate, in a press release.

Records filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation seem to indicate that the Hemphill location won’t be getting the big overhaul. The project is described as interior and exterior painting, replacing ceiling tiles and flooring, reconfiguring the restrooms and adding an exterior ramp to comply with disability accessibility.

Other clues: the work is only taking 10 days, and bigger renovations have cost $500,000 to over $1 million.

Whataburger hasn’t yet responded to questions about the project.

The company, founded in 1950, is headquartered in San Antonio and has more than 900 locations in 14 states with sales of more than $3 billion annually. Texas is home to 720 locations.

Whataburger also announced in 2020 that it was expanding into new markets, starting with Tennessee and Kansas City. The first of three Whataburgers in Colorado opened exactly one year ago (and four more are opening this year). In Georgia, which has two locations in Atlanta and a third in the southern part of the state, the company will open another nine restaurants this year in the Atlanta metro.

Other states with Whataburgers (so far) are:

  • Alabama (29)

  • Arizona (37)

  • Arkansas (8)

  • Colorado (3)

  • Florida (43)

  • Georgia (3)

  • Kansas (5)

  • Louisiana (23)

  • Mississippi (11)

  • Missouri (8)

  • New Mexico (11)

  • Oklahoma (36)
