Anonymous donor pays off student loans for all new graduates at Texas HBCU Wiley College

More than 100 graduating seniors at Wiley College walked out Saturday with a diploma — and no student debt.

An anonymous donor cleared the slates of the entire graduating class at the Marshall, Tex., historically black college, school officials announced Saturday.

In total, the loans added up to about $300,000.

“Our commitment to our students goes beyond their time while they are enrolled. We are constantly communicating with donors to assist students in these ways so that they can begin their after-college experience with less debt,” President Herman J. Felton, Jr. said in a statement.

“We are grateful for this anonymous donor who will assist the students in paying off their balances to Wiley College and help us achieve institutional goals of graduating our students with little to no debt.”

Wiley is best known from the 2007 movie “The Great Debaters,” starring Denzel Washington, about the school’s debate team’s triumph over the powerhouse University of Southern California in 1935, with segregation in place.
