Anna Wintour Offers Apology Ahead of 2024 Met Gala

Anna Wintour knows she messed up when it comes to the 2024 Met Gala, and she's expressing her regrets before the show goes on.

“This exhibition broke my cardinal rule,” the 74-year-old admitted during an interview with Jenna Bush Hager that aired on Today just hours ahead of the year's biggest fashion event—which she revealed takes years to plan—on Monday, May 6.

The title for 2024 is "Sleeping Beauties," and it is accompanied by the dress code "Garden of Time"—a notable diversion from years past, when the two typically flowed together, like 2022's "In America: An Anthology of Fashion," 2018's "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," and 2016's "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology."

"Sleeping Beauties" is the Met's newest exhibit, which Hager describes as "an ode to some of fashion's most ancient garments."

“When we came up with the title ‘Sleeping Beauties,’ it’s wonderful and poetic and romantic," she reflected. "But, actually, it could be many, many things.” Things that onlookers and attendees alike may have a hard time conceptualizing, especially under the lens of "Garden of Time," which she said "unleashed a lot of confusion out there."

"...for [that] I deeply apologize,” she added.

Wintour kept a tight lip about who would be in attendance beyond the year's co-chairs (Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez), as well as what any of them planned to wear, though she teased an expectation of "a lot of flowers" on the red carpet.

Though whether she'd be in florals (groundbreaking!), she simply teased, “Possibly.”
