Ankeny clothing nonprofit TAKE looks to buy its own building. How you can donate:

The Ankeny Klothing Exchange, a nonprofit supporting people in need with free clothing and household goods, needs help moving to a new home.

The organization, known as TAKE, currently uses space in a building at 718 N.E. Grant St. that it shares with New Horizons Adult Day Care, a nonprofit that provides therapeutic and social support for adults with physical and cognitive challenges. New Horizons owns the building.

TAKE's announced over the summer that its lease is ending, and it will need to leave its current location by Dec. 31 as New Horizons plans to expand. Lisa Noble, director of New Horizons, confirmed that New Horizons will no longer be renting out space in the Grant Street building as it works out the details of future plans.

TAKE officials crunched the numbers and found that buying a building outright, rather than leasing a space in Ankeny's expensive commercial rental market, would be the most economical and sustainable option. TAKE previously had to move out of the Neveln building on School Street, which previously housed several nonprofits, in 2021 after the school district moved forward with renovating the Neveln into a main office.

"We like the idea of never moving again," said Lu Ann Barnes, a TAKE board member and volunteer.

But that costs money. TAKE officials said the nonprofit has negotiated to buy the building at 105 E. First St., a former RE/MAX location near the Flowerama, but they need $200,000 for a down payment and $100,000 to remodel the building from offices into an open, thrift-store-like space.

TAKE has raised about $130,000 needed so far, but must raise the rest for the down payment by the end of November. Officials said TAKE will not close, and they are are optimistic that they'll raise the money they need to buy the building.

According to TAKE, demand for its services has grown, and it will be high during the holiday season. More than 900 individuals shopped at TAKE in October for 3,140 people in their households.
