Animal Control Renewed for Season 3 at Fox, Ahead of Season 2 Premiere

Animal Control just can’t be tamed, it seems: The Fox comedy has scored a very early Season 3 renewal, ahead of its return for Season 2.

The show’s freshman run averaged 2.2 million total viewers (with Live+7 playback), ranking No. 2 (behind the cancelled Call Me Kat) among all comedies Fox aired last TV season. In the demo, it averaged a 0.4 rating.

Animal Control is an incredibly irreverent series that expresses everything viewers expect from a Fox comedy,” said Michael Thorn, Fox Entertainment’s president of scripted programming, in a statement on Tuesday. “It has an amazing amount of momentum behind it, and we’ve been so impressed by the work Joel [McHale], Bob [Fisher], Rob [Greenberg], Dan [Sterling], Tad [Quill], Jake [Fuller] and the entire cast are delivering for Season 2, we wanted to reward them with the opportunity to deliver even more of this special show to fans next season.”

Starring Community‘s Joel McHale, the series follows a group of Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated much more by humans than the animals they encounter on the job. McHale’s Frank is an opinionated, eccentric ex-cop who got fired for trying to expose corruption in his department; the ensemble also includes Michael Rowland as Fred “Shred” Taylor; Vella Lovell as Emily Price; Ravi Patel as Amit Patel; Grace Palmer as Victoria Sands; and Gerry Dee as Templeton Dudge.

The upcoming second season, meanwhile — which, according to the logline, will “usher in mating season for both the animals and the officers who protect them” — premieres Wednesday, March 6, at 9/8c on Fox. Season 2 guest stars include Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Krystal Smith (Welcome to Flatch) and McHale’s Community co-star Ken Jeong.
