Angelina Jolie Says She Wears Trench Coats As a Way to Go Into “Hiding”

Angelina Jolie is known for many things. She is an award-winning actor, director, mother, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She also has one of the most sophisticated closets in Hollywood—a wardrobe designers and fashion girls everywhere continue to be inspired by—but in a new interview, she admits her sense of fashion comes down to practicality and a wish to hide from the spotlight.

“I’ve been a mom, and I’ve fully absorbed that into who I am,” she told WSJ. Magazine, speaking of why she chooses to dress the way she does.

Angelina often relies on timeless staples from Chanel, Saint Laurent, and Celine for her easy-yet-chic ensembles. Her street-style looks are usually composed of wide-leg pants or shift dresses—in black, white, or nude tones—cozy sweaters, sleek heels, dainty gold jewelry, and, very often, trench coats.

“My daughter jokes that I wear too many trench coats,” Angelina said. But rather than it being a fashion statement, the actor said, “It’s just like a hiding thing.”

In the interview, Angelina admits life has been difficult since 2016, when she divorced from the father of her six children, Brad Pitt. She has been unable to move out of Los Angeles—despite being wildly unimpressed by her native Hollywood—due to the ongoing legal disputes with Brad, and the only true friends she has, she says, are her kids.

Of course, career-wise, Angelina has always remained focused. The multi-hyphenate continues her philanthropic work with the United Nations, mainly centered on the refugee crisis. She is signed onto various film projects; she is producing a Broadway show, The Outsiders, which opens in April; and she is starting a sustainable clothing line, Atelier Jolie.

“I can’t stop,” she said of her work ethic. “I always think there’s like a fight coming.”

Still, Angelina admitted that people around her laughed when she told them about her clothing brand: “You, in fashion? No.”

“I’ve never been to a fashion show or Met Ball my entire life,” she noted, despite the fact that she has often worked with designers for her red-carpet looks. Instead of following trends, she said, “I love individuality and I love freedom.”

Speaking of what’s next in her life, Angelina said she is just ready to keep moving forward. While she prefers to stay out of the bright Hollywood lights and do her work quietly, she said she is actually more comfortable than ever in her body. “It’s like I see my scars and my things, and I feel like I’ve lived. And I’m having these big experiences, and I have this map of this complex body that’s changed over time,” said the actor, who got a double mastectomy in 2013. “You and I both know that a woman with a full life is very hot.”
