Andy Dalton is well aware of the hype surrounding rookie quarterback Justin Fields. But he wants everyone to remember who the Chicago Bears‘ starting quarterback is: himself.

Dalton spoke about the Bears’ quarterback competition at a press conference on Tuesday. He knows Fields will eventually get a chance to be Chicago’s franchise quarterback. But for now, he’s the starter.

“He’s a first round pick, I understand that, but I also understand that I’m the starter,” Dalton said on Tuesday, via Kaitlin Sharkey of FOX32 Sports.

Dalton may be the starter right now, but let’s not kid ourselves. Fields will eventually take over the Bears’ offense. It’s only a matter of time.

Andy Dalton isn’t just speculating here. Bears head coach Matt Nagy promised him the starting position when Dalton signed earlier this offseason.

“They told me I was the starter,” Dalton said about picking the Bears. “That was one of the reasons why I wanted to come here.”

This could create a problem for Matt Nagy and the Chicago Bears this upcoming season. Broken promises can often create toxic environments within NFL locker rooms.

The reality is Justin Fields will probably end up getting a lot of playing time at some point during the regular season. And Dalton won’t have much of a say or control over the situation.

The Bears’ training camp begins tomorrow, July 28. Dalton will have to play well to hold off the rookie Fields.
