Earlier this offseason, Andy Dalton made his free-agency decision and it was a bit of a surprise.

Dalton chose to sign with the New Orleans Saints. There’s a clear understanding he’ll be the backup to Jameis Winston.

Although Dalton has fought for a starting position time and time again throughout his career, the longtime NFL QB is well aware this season will be different.

Dalton is fully prepared to step out of the way. In doing so, he can best help Winston, who projects to be the Saints’ starter this fall.

“This Is Jameis’ thing,” Dalton said, via Pro Football Talk. “I’m here to help him out in any way that I can. I’m excited to work with him, be in the same room, and see everything I can do to help him out to make him the best player he can be.”

The benefit of having a guy like Andy Dalton in an organization is his experience. Jameis Winston will no doubt benefit.

The Saints are in a good position as well. If Winston gets injured or struggles this upcoming season the team can transition to Dalton if it so chooses.

New Orleans now has one of the more experienced quarterback rooms in the NFL. That’s never a bad thing.
