André Braugher's Net Worth at the Time of His Death

André Braugher

André Braugher, an Emmy Award-winning dramatic actor who translated his studied deadpan into comedic genius as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, died after a brief illness at the age of 61, leaving behind a loving family, a storied career and a net worth that, while considerable, hardly reflects his enormous value as an actor, father, husband, friend and colleague.

"I'm honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent," Brooklyn Nine-Nine costar Terry Crews wrote on Instagram. "This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like. Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man. 😢❤️"

Braugher is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley, brother Charles Jennings and his mother, Sally Braugher. Read on for more about how the late actor got his start and what he earned along the way.

How did André Braugher get his start?

Braugher, who was born and raised in Chicago, earned a B.A. from Stanford University and a graduate diploma from Juilliard (he attended both schools on scholarship). He made both his film and television debuts in 1989, appearing in the historical war drama Glory and the TV movies Kojak: Ariana and Kojak: Fatal Flaw. He went on to appear in numerous television movies and shows throughout the 1990s, but broke out in a big way with his starring role as Detective Frank Pembleton on the hit NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street, which aired from 1993 to 1998. Braugher spent 100 episodes playing that character, for which he won a primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1998.

He also acted in memorable movies like Spike Lee's Get on The Bus, Primal Fear and City of Angels. But in recent years, he became beloved for his imagining of the gay, straight-laced police captain on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

What was André Braugher's net worth at the time of his death?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Andre Braugher had a net worth of $8 million at the time of his death. He accumulated the bulk of his wealth by acting in both TV shows and movies.

What shows did André Braugher star in?

In addition to Homicide: Life on the Street, Braugher appeared in shows like Gideon's Crossing, Hack, Men of a Certain Age and Last Resort. Although five of his series never made it past the second season in the aftermath of Homicide, Braugher did eventually hit it big again on TV with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which he starred in from 2013 to 2021. The series thrust him deep into the comedy world, which he'd only briefly gotten a taste of alongside Ray Romano in the short-lived Men of a Certain Age.

“Everything’s new. I’d never done it before. Am I any good?” Braugher recalled asking himself. “I remember turning to my wife and asking her, ‘Is this funny?’ And she said, ‘Yes, of course, you’re not being deceived.’ But I kept looking at it, saying to myself, is this good? I couldn’t really judge.”

Sadly, Braugher was unable to finish his most recent role in Netflix's The Residence before his death.

Ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike shutdown, only four episodes had been filmed out of the eight ordered, Deadline reported. The Residence, created/executive produced by Paul William Davies, with Shonda Rhimes and Betsey Beers also working as executive producers, is set to resume production on Jan. 2. It's unclear whether this date will be pushed back (or Braugher's part re-cast) in light of the actor's death.

The Netflix show stars Uzo Aduba and is inspired by Kate Andersen Brower's novel, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. Before his passing, Braugher filmed half of Season 1 as a character named A.B. Wynter. According to Netflix's Tudum, The Residence is a "comedic whodunit revolving around the most disastrous state dinner in history."
