American Horror Story star Sarah Paulson has landed her next lead movie role in I Am Sybil, appearing alongside The Great's Elle Fanning.

The movie is based on the real-life story of Shirley Mason, who was one of the first well-known cases of dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder.

Mason's case was explored in a nonfiction book by Flora Rheta Schreiber published in 1973, where the patient was known by the name Sybil, while the book itself followed her treatment by psychologist Cornelia B Wilbur.

I Am Sybil will reportedly see Fanning play Mason, while Paulson will take on the role of Wilbur, according to Deadline. Judy & Punch's Mirrah Foulkes is set to direct and also co-write the screenplay alongside Jen Silverman.

The movie will draw upon the 2011 book Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case by Debbie Nathan, which disputes Schreiber's account.

The story was previously adapted for the screen, including a 1976 movie starring Sally Field and Joanne Woodward, and a 2007 one with Tammy Blanchard and Jessica Lange.

Meanwhile, last year Paulson expressed doubt about returning to the American Horror Story franchise after starring in multiple seasons.

"It's not that I'm not open to it," she told Variety. "I'm always open to it, but I feel like I've been doing it for a long time, and people might start getting sick of me in that world.

"Let someone else scream and run and cry for a second. Other people can do that too! Also, my nervous system. There was a time when I was younger when I was like, 'I can do this all night. I love it!' Now I'm like, 'Momma's tired!'"

I Am Sybil is yet to confirm a release date.
