American Horror Story star Evan Peters is joining the cast of the upcoming Tron film Tron: Ares.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peters will star opposite Jared Leto in the flick. Joachim Rønning — who has previously worked with Disney on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Young Woman and the Sea — is directing.

Released in 1982, the first Tron film followed the story of game designer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), who finds himself transported into his own game.

A sequel titled Tron: Legacy was released in 2010, featuring Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde starring alongside Bridges.

Work on a third film has been bubbling away since Legacy's release, with Leto onfirming his involvement in 2020.

THR reports that the new film will largely take place outside the game simulation. Leto's character is said to be a sentient manifestation of the programme, which finds its way into the real world.

Details about Peters' character are yet to be revealed. However, THR suggests that his role could either be a soldier from the game or an "awkward" gamer.

Known for his roles in AHS, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, Peters most recently caught attention for playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the Netflix miniseries Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Since the controversial show's release, Netflix has decided to create an anthology series from the programme, with each new season focusing on a different monstrous figure.

Tron: Ares is yet to receive a release date.
