‘Ambushed’ Alabama police officer fatally shot on lunch break

An Alabama police officer was shot to death early Tuesday morning when he went back to his apartment on a break from work.

Selma Police Officer Marquis Moorer, 25, stopped home between 3:30 and 4 a.m. and was inside eating when a suspect outside the apartment began firing, according to police.

Moorer was killed and a woman inside, believed to be his partner, was injured. Her condition is unclear.

Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said Moorer was “ambushed,” but few other details were made public Tuesday.

A suspect has not yet been arrested or identified.

“He was an outstanding officer,” Jackson said of Moorer. “He took his job very seriously.”

Multiple agencies, including the State Bureau of Investigation, Selma police, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, ATF and the 4th Judicial Drug Task Force, are investigating the deadly shooting.

“The Selma Police Department is devastated,” Chief Kenta Fulford said during a press conference. “We’re asking the community for your prayers.”
