Amazon set to hire 150,000 seasonal employees in preparation for the holiday season

With the holidays fast approaching, Amazon is ramping up their efforts to get packages out of their warehouse with the hiring of 150,000 seasonal employees.

The shopping giant previously hired 100,000 seasonal workers last season, CBS reported.

The temporary employees will be tasked with helping to store, pack and ship products from Amazon’s cavernous warehouses at the rate of $18 an hour and an additional $3 an hour for those who choose to work overnights and weekends.

New hires can also expect to receive a $3,000 signing bonus depending on which location they work in.

In their second quarter earnings, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said that they were spending more money than usual on hiring.

“We’re spending a lot of money on signing and incentives,” Olsavsky said. “And while we have very good staffing levels, it’s not without a cost. It’s a very competitive labor market out there, and certainly, the biggest contributor to inflationary pressures that we’re seeing in the business.”

The seasonal workers will be mainly stationed in California with the company looking to bring on 23,000 workers in the state. Over 6,000 are expected in Arizona and 4,500 in Illinois. Similar numbers can be expected in other high demand states like New York, New Jersey, Texas and Florida.

With a history of hiring “many” seasonal workers for full-time roles, many temporary employees have the potential to do just that. With more operation centers opening, including 250 logistics plants in 2021, the company will be looking to also fill nearly 40,000 corporate and tech positions.
