Apple TV+ Reveals New Trailer for ‘Fancy Dance’ Starring Lily Gladstone – Film News in Brief

Apple TV+ released a new trailer for its drama “Fancy Dance” starring Lily Gladstone and Isabel Deroy-Olson.

The film follows Jax (Gladstone), who has cared for her niece Rokie (Deroy-Olson) since her sister’s disappearance by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. When she risks losing custody of Roki, the two hit the road and scour backcountry to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow.

“Fancy Dance,” a Confluential Films and Significant Productions/AUM Group production, is produced by Deidre Backs, Erica Tremblay, Heather Rae, Nina Yang Bongiovi and Tommy Oliver. Bird Runningwater, Lily Gladstone, Forest Whitaker and Charlotte Koh serve as executive producers.

DeNiro Con Unveils Lineup for Event During Tribeca Festival

DeNiro Con, celebrating 80 years of the actor who co-founded the Tribeca festival, is has unveiled its lineup for the event at Spring Studios in New York City from June 14-16. The three-day event includes a 50th anniversary celebration of “Mean Streets,” conversation’s with DeNiro’s collaborators, an exhibit of materials from his personal archive and the premiere of immersive film “DeNiro, New York.”

Screenings include the world premiere of “A Bronx Tale: The Original One Man Show” with an introduction by Chazz Palminteri; “Jackie Brown,” followed by a conversation with director Quentin Tarantino and De Niro; “Analyze This,” followed by a conversation with stars Billy Crystal and De Niro, moderated by Whoopi Goldberg; “Silver Linings Playbook” followed by a conversation with director David O. Russell; “New York, New York” with an introduction by Kathrine Narducci; “The Good Shepherd” with an introduction by John Turturro; “Goodfellas” followed by a conversation with screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, moderated by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon; “The Deer Hunter” with an introduction by star Christopher Walken; “Meet The Parents” with an introduction by Ahmed Ahmed; as well as screenings of “The Godfather Part II,” “Raging Bull” and “Taxi Driver.”

Amazon Prime Video Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month With Releasing AAPI-led Content

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Amazon Prime Video is releasing content to diversify and celebrate the Asian & Pacific Islander communities.

The selected material will include AAPI-led Amazon originals & exclusives, and added titles included with Prime. As well as content available to rent or buy, and films and TV series accessible with add-on subscriptions or for free with ads on Amazon Freevee. “Aquaman,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Past Lives” and “Invincible” are all titles available for streaming this month.

Three seasons of “Heritage Heroes,” by the Asian American Foundation are also available. The series consists of short films AAPI creators and highlights activists, and community leaders for the impact they’ve made in culture. The featured talent in “Heritage Heroes” includes Daniel Dae Kim, Simu Liu, Liza Koshy, Auli’i Cravalho, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ming-Na Wen, Jeannie Mai, Lisa Ling, Lea Salonga, Prabal Gurung, Phillip Lim and more.

Lower East Side Film Festival Announces Winners

The Lower East Side Film Festival winners have been announced, with Caroline Lindy’s “Your Monster,” starring Melissa Barrera and Meghann Fahy, taking home the Best of Fest award.

“Love and Work” received Best Feature Film, “Another Day: A Beautiful Chaos” was named Best Animated Short, “We Ride For Her” won Best Documentary Short, “Baggage” won for Best Live Action Short and “Sleeping Alone” received the LESFF Audience Award.

Written and directed by Dan Perlman, “Practice Space” was awarded the LESFF Neighborhood Award, a specialty award for one film each year that captures the spirit of the Lower East Side neighborhood, New York City and the spirit of the festival. The film stars Alex Chavez and Yan Bo Lin.

Post A-Bomb Thriller ‘Time of the Heathen’ (1961) // 4K Restoration by UCLA Opens May

Arbelos is set to release UCLA’s 4K restoration version of “Time of the Heathen” this month. It will open at Film at Lincoln Center in New York, N.Y. on May 10 and the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles on May 12.

Directed by Peter Kass with visuals by cinematographer Ed Emshwiller, the film follows the aftermath of the atomic bomb and shifting politics during the 1960s. It stars John Heffernan.

The logline reads, “Emerging from the void, mysterious drifter Gaunt (Heffernan) wanders the upstate countryside in a daze with only his bible for company. But after happening upon the murder of a local female housekeeper at the hands of a rural deviant, Gaunt soon finds himself framed for the attack. Forced to flee deeper into the woods with the only witness to the crime—the woman’s young deaf mute son Jesse—the pair forge a complex bond that culminates in one of cinema’s most memorable, psychedelic, and unclassifiable endings.”

The Blackhouse Foundation and Netflix Partner on the Netflix Nonfiction Producing Fellowship 

The Blackhouse Foundation and Netflix are teaming up on the Netflix Nonfiction Producing Fellowship, which is a year-long program for rising producers from underrepresented backgrounds.

The fellowship awards five people the opportunity to work on a production under the Netflix Nonfiction Film and Series teams. The categories include documentary, sports and unscripted. There will be masterclasses, meetings, mentorship, hands-on training and individual coaching from award-winning creative executives.

“We’re excited to partner with The Blackhouse Foundation on a program dedicated to elevating and advancing new voices in the industry. Now in our third year, the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity invests in organizations and crafts programs that broaden the diversity of storytelling within entertainment,” Tiffany Burrell, director of creative talent development at Netflix.

The Netflix Nonfiction teams are behind films and series including “Our Living World,” “American Symphony” and “Stamped from the Beginning.”

Producers Guild of America Announces Scripted Producers and Producing Teams for PGA Create Program

The Producers Guild of America announced the 10 producers and producing teams invited to join the PGA Create lab for emerging and mid-career creative producers. The program is focused on supporting and uplifting producers from underrepresented backgrounds.

From Monday, June 3 through Thursday, June 6, PGA Create’s scripted cycle will feature creative producers and teams in active development, financing or packaging of a feature or series. The lab offers fellows the opportunity to hone their pitches, attend master classes led by experienced producers, and expand their network of fellow producers.

Features producers Laura Fries (“Body Shop”), Andria Wilson Mirza (“Heirloom”), Evelyn Angelica Martinez (“Joyride”) Valeria Contreras (“Not My Name”), Constanza Castro and Doménica Castro (“Out to Get You”) Phoebe Wong (“Paper Tigers”), Mireia Vilanova (“Silence Sometimes”) and Annam Rizwan and Asad Farooqui (“The Immigration Game”) were invited to join the lab. Series producers Andrew K. Li (“Blissful Acres”) and Becca E. Davis (“Through Violet Eyes”) will also join the lab.

Animation Studio LAIKA and Fashion Brand WILDFANG Combine Fashion and FIlm in Clothing Collaboration

Inclusive fashion brand WILDFANG and animation studio LAIKA created a limited edition collaboration, with a three-piece collection featuring original illustrations inspired by LAIKA’s Academy Award nominated stories “Coraline,” “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “The Boxtrolls.”

The pieces also include a quote from each movie on the collar. The “Coraline” inspired long sleeve button up includes a print inspired by the garden from the movie. A short sleeve button up inspired by “The Boxtrolls” includes an illustration inspired by the Cavern Garden, and a cropped short sleeve button up inspired by “Kubo and the Two Strings” features a print inspired by Japanese maples.
