Amazon’s Fallout Series Trailer Features Radroaches, a Yao Guai, Eerie Michael Emerson and Lots More

The first trailer for Prime Video’s Fallout series is here, and it’s a big ol’ scattering of Easter eggs for fans of the video game franchise.

Premiering Friday, April 12, 2024, the TV series — which comes from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy — serves up an original story set in the Fallout universe, that will also be considered part of the games’ canon.

Looking at the trailer above, fans of the Fallout games (particularly the most recent ones) will feel right at home in this wasteland, which honestly feels like a stew of almost all of them. The story picks up over 200 years after a nuclear war in 2077, when the world adopted a retro-50s “futuristic nostalgia” vibe with hover cars, butler robots, and oldies music. Like the first game in 1997, the show takes place in Los Angeles. But its story and timeline definitely take more of a page from Fallout 3, where a Vault Dweller named Lucy (played by Yellowjackets‘ Ella Purnell) ventures out into the world for the first time and has to contend with a brutal, unrelenting world.

Lucy hails from Vault 33, a totally new Vault, but one that definitely seems similar to Vault 101 in Fallout 3. There appears to be an insurrection of some sort, plus Lucy has a tearful moment with an older man — Overseer Hank (Kyle MacLachlan) — who might be her father. If this really is like Fallout 3, then her reason for leaving the Vault might be to chase down her dad. You’ll also notice she wears the classic Pip-Boy, of course, and will apparently come across the NCR’s Brotherhood of Steel faction. (We could very well see a war between the NCR and Brotherhood during this show, in fact.)

And yes, fans will also apparently get to see loads of iconic Fallout creatures wreaking havoc. The oversized radroaches, a fearsome Yao Guai, plus all the calm, murderous robots left over from the past. We see a gunslinging Ghoul (Justified‘s Walton Goggins) who might actually be Raul Tajeda from Fallout: New Vegas, since we know ghouls can live a long, long time…

The series’ cast also includes Aaron Moten (NeXT), Moisés Arias (The King of Staten Island), Sarita Choudhury (And Just Like That…), Michael Emerson (Evil), Leslie Uggams (Empire), Frances Turner (New Amsterdam), Dave Register, Zach Cherry (Severance), Johnny Pemberton (Superstore), Rodrigo Luzzi (Dead Ringers), Annabel O’Hagan (Law & Order: SVU) and Xelia Mendes-Jones (The Wheel of Time).
