We’ve officially reached the year’s halfway mark, and that means that some brands have enough data to create substantial “Best of…” lists. One of the first is Amazon. Today (June 9), its book editors released its list of the 20 best books of 2021 so far, and popular bookclub pick Great Circle, by Maggie Shipstead, snagged the top spot.

This list was hand-curated by Amazon Books Editors and features a mix of best-sellers that customers and the editors loved, as well as some titles that are newer and more obscure.

While this list includes works from well-known authors and features New York Times best-selling titles, 2021’s top-ranking book to date, as chosen by the Books Editors, is Maggie Shipstead’s Great Circle. Editors describe it as “an American story about independence, shedding your past, following your dreams and pushing your limits.”

Al Woodworth of the Amazon Book Review confidently said that “this is one of the best books I’ve read this year.

The esteemed reviewer explained that this book follows main character Marian Graves, who becomes obsessed with flying at a young age. “She’ll do whatever it takes to get into the sky and circumnavigate the globe, including forging a relationship with a wealthy bootlegger.”

Several professional book reviewers echoed Woodworth’s sentiment on the book’s brilliance. For example, Ron Charles of The Washington Post called Great Circlerelentlessly exciting” before dubbing it “my top recommendation for the summer.”

More reviewers sang its praises, with one gushing that it’s “one of the best books I’ve ever read,” while another added that it’s “a soaring work of historical fiction.”

Amazon reviewers are also amazed by the writing and story. One stunned reader shared, “Finally! A sweeping, romantic, glorious adventure of a novel. The perfect summer book.”
