'The Amazing Race 36' Leaves Teams Turned Around in Mexico

The teams at the starting line of 'The Amazing Race 36'

The Amazing Race returned for its 36th season, sending 13 brand-new pairs out into the world in the pursuit of the one million dollar prize. But it was far from a "fiesta" for the teams, as they spent the day in Puerto Vallarta lugging heavy rocking horses, watching a royal rumble, and jumping through hoops to survive. And while the day was full of navigational problems for many teams, for one, it proved fatal

Maya Mody and Rohan Mody – Siblings from Monmouth Junction, NJ

Siblings Maya and Rohan have been huge fans of The Amazing Race, to the point where they purposely took different languages in high school in preparation for the show. But the students got schooled fairly quickly in their first (and only) leg as racers. Having to navigate without a map, the two spent most of the premiere lost in the streets of Puerto Vallarta. And though they were able to impressively catch up to some of the other struggling teams, much like their car at a certain point, they hit a dead end.

Which teams finished at the top tonight?

Former NFL player Rod Gardner and his wife Leticia Gardner were the MVPs of the premiere. They impressively kept up in the front of the pack the whole time, and made a late surge when Rod aced the lasso Roadblock. The people they passed were Ricky Rotandi and César Aldrete. Despite the dating couple perhaps not being perceived as serious threats initially, their skills and César's knowledge of Mexico kept them in first place for most of the leg, ultimately finishing second. The oldest team in the race, married retired police officers Derek and Shelisa Williams, finished in third.

Which teams finished at the bottom tonight?

The final minutes of the premiere was a chaotic race to the mat for three teams. Chris Foster and Mary Cardona-Foster had difficulties from the get-go, struggling on foot and getting boxed out of the Detour. Dating aestheticians Amber Craven and Vinny Cagungun maintained a middle of the pack position until they got majorly lost going to and coming from the Roadblock. Luckily, both pairs were able to survive to live another day.
