‘I am BLOWN AWAY’: Missouri native Sheryl Crow nominated for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Every day might be a winding road, but Missouri native Sheryl Crow’s musical journey just led her to a nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Crow is among first-time nominees announced Wednesday.

“I am BLOWN AWAY by the @rockhall nomination… it really means so much to me,” Crow tweeted Wednesday night. “Thank for your support, and for being a part of the voting process! Love you all!”

Crow joins 2023 nominees Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson, Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden and the late George Michael.

Other nominees include Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, The White Stripes, Joy Division/New Order and Warren Zevon.

The inductees will be announced in May, with a ceremony following in the fall. Music artists, historians and music industry professionals will vote, but fans can vote too, online — at vote.rockhall.com — or at the museum in Cleveland.

The top five artists chosen by the public will be tallied along with the professional ballots.

Crow marked another first last summer when she was the headliner for the annual Big Slick fundraiser for Children’s Mercy, which raised a record $3.5 million. She lit up T-Mobile Center performing her hits.

Crow began as a backup singer on Michael Jackson’s Bad Tour in 1987 and recorded backing vocals for Stevie Wonder and other artists before her Grammy-winning 1994 debut album “Tuesday Night Music Club.” The album included several of her iconic hits, including “All I Wanna Do” and “Strong Enough.”

Her self-titled album in 1996 had more hits — “A Change Would Do You Good,” “If It Makes You Happy” and “Everyday Is a Winding Road.”

Along the way she fought breast cancer and depression.

She typically keeps her private life private. But the documentary “Sheryl” that debuted last year detailed her nearly 30 years in the music industry that began with her playing piano scales in her hometown of Kennett, Missouri, and has led to a multi-platinum album career.

Crow, who turns 61 in a few days, told “Good Morning America” last year she decided it was time to reveal the woman behind the award-winning hits.

“I think being my age now, it feels a little bit like a privilege and an honor to be able to sit down and say, people who are very visible and who are doing high profile work, they’re still people at the end of the day,” she told “GMA.”

“We are pretty harsh about tearing people down. And if people only think that I’m the girl that did ‘All I Want to Do’ and ‘Soak Up the Sun,’ there’s a whole world of living that goes behind wanting to even write songs. And generally the songs that tell the story aren’t the ones that get played on the radio.”

Crow has long been involved in philanthropy work, too, including Sandy Hook Promise, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Elton John Aids Foundation, Rock the Vote and Habitat for Humanity.

After performing three of her hit songs in her debut appearance at Big Slick last year, Sheryl Crow got a hug from host Eric Stonestreet at the T-Mobile Center.

She told the Big Slick audience that she had admired the fundraiser over the years and had been tempted to call the hosts and invite herself to participate. “I’ve made a lot of new friends here,” she said.

She told how she and her band visited children’s hospitals as they toured, which included a stop at Children’s Mercy, “pre-COVID,” she said.

She played “Every Day Is a Winding Road,” which she said “has new meaning this year.”

Elliott, Lauper, Nelson, Zevon, the Stripes and Joy Division/New Order are also first-time nominees. An artist’s first commercial release must come out at least 25 years before the year they are nominated.

Crow’s fans congratulated her on social media, some pledging to vote for her every day.

This year’s Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser will take place on June 2 and 3, but no celebrity guests have been announced yet.
