Already miss the Choco Taco? Some of the last treats in existence are coming to Bellingham

All those dreary months of rain and cloud-filled skies that will likely stick around until the fifth of July.

All the nights when the sun sets long before you get off work and won’t return until a time more suitable for brunch.

Even the smokey, yellowy filtered sunlight we experienced most of last weekend.

They’re all about to become worth it — if you don’t mind kicking some dirt on a tasty piece of your childhood soul, that is.

Bellingham has been chosen to host one of four events across the nation where Klondike will give away the final 912 Choco Tacos in existence. The Bellingham event is scheduled to be held between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Peter Paulson Stage at 300 W. Laurel St. near the Trackside Beer Garden.

Did somebody say Choco Tacos? And if so, why in Bellingham?

Simple, because the sun don’t shine here ... at least not all that often.

When Klondike announced July 28 that it was discontinuing the Choco Taco — think Drumstick flattened into the shape of a taco — the company realized it had 912 ice cream treats still remaining.

Klondike took to Twitter, asking Choco Taco fans what it should do with the final 912.

One fan told them exactly what to do with them, writing, “No, take the last 912 & shove them where the sun don’t shine on the genius or genius’ that made this incredibly stupid decision. Bring back #ChocoTaco with a marketing campaign & a new method of distribution. Not just gas stations!”

“Where the sun don’t shine” — enter Bellingham.

Our darkness will become a tasty final resting place for some of the 912 Choco Tacos.

According to the Sun Don’t Shine Klondike Choco Taco Giveaway official rules, the first 135 people to show up at the event, consent to a hold harmless agreement AND make the Klondike polar bear laugh or Mayor Seth Fleetwood laugh or smile, get one Choco Taco.

Due to a scheduling conflict, Fleetwood will be unable to attend Tuesday’s event, Communications Director Janice Keller told The Bellingham Herald in an email, adding, “We welcome the Klondike team and the polar bear to Bellingham, where — despite our reputation as sometimes wet and dark — they will enjoy visiting one of the most beautiful places in our country. We’re glad they chose our community for their event.”

And what about the other 777 Choco Tacos? Why so stingy?

Bellingham is actually the third of four stops on the Choco Taco final tour schedule. On Sept. 3, the ice cream treats were handed out in the 912 area code at a Savannah (Georgia) Bananas baseball game, and Sept. 9, a ice cream freezer was hidden in Death Valley to reenact the movie plot from the movie “Rat Race” — both ideas inspired by other fan tweets.

And if you miss the event in Bellingham, Klondike will host a digital scavenger hunt beginning Sept. 21, with clues being dispersed on Klondike’s Instagram page (@klondikebar), according to a release announcing the Bellingham event, “sending fans nationwide on a virtual chase to find one of the last Choco Tacos.”
