Alicia Vikander and husband Michael Fassbender team up for Korean movie

Real-life husband and wife duo Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are joining forces for Hope, an upcoming thriller from acclaimed Korean director Na Hong-Jin.

According to Deadline, the movie's script is largely Korean and tells the story of the residents of Hopo Port. There, what's described as "a mysterious discovery is made" that leads to something potentially catastrophic.

That leads to the residents of the town being "in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before".

Squid Game's breakout star Hoyeon will also star in the upcoming movie, but her role, just like Fassbender and Vikander's, all remain under wraps for now.

Hope marks Na's first feature film since his 2016 hit The Wailing, and second collaboration with cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, who's known for his work on the Oscar-winning movie Parasite.

Speaking about Hope in a statement, Na said: "Oftentimes, a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen."

Vikander, who's been married to Fassbender since 2017, is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Lara Croft in 2018's Tomb Raider remake.

The actress was set to reprise the role in a sequel, but it was cancelled last year after MGM Studios let the window for authorising it pass.

The news came shortly after Vikander gave fans a disappointing update on the film, telling Entertainment Weekly: "With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it's kind of politics. I think Misha and I have been ready, so it's kind of in somebody else's hands, to be honest."

Hope begins filming in Korea later this year.
