Alicia Keys' Net Worth in 2024 Hits Quite a High Note

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys' net worth is the result of decades of hard work before she ever made it big—and a whole lot of hustling once she did.

The "Superwoman" singer, however, credits the universe itself for a lot of her success.

"I've always been ... somebody who understands the fight of defying the odds," she told NPR in 2020. "I think that drives me a lot with what I sing about, and what I write about really talks about kind of this idea of potential and possibility because I as well, at one time, there was nothing but a potential or possibility. There was no reason why it should happen or not happen. I do believe it's definitely hard work; it's definitely tenacity and grit; surely, you know, determination. But it's also: Destiny and fate is a part of it to some degree."

Authenticity is also a key part of Keys' brand. While she's only ever been described as gracious to others, she made a point to not compromise on her art, which almost cost her a record deal early in her career—but clearly paid off in the end. How did Alicia Keys become famous?

While it seemed like Alicia Keys was an overnight success after "Fallin'" blew up the charts, it took her a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get there.

Alicia Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood (made famous by Daredevil). Raised by a single mom, Keys developed an early love for jazz and began piano lessons when she was 7 years old, writing her first song when she was 12. She continued classical music training until she was 18 and credits her musical education with keeping her out of trouble and helping her find herself.

"That type of studying, that type of discipline ... after a while, I realized what it provided me—focus, the ability to pay attention for a long enough period of time to make progress," she later told NPR. "The work ethic; the actual knowledge of music, that then unlocked the ability to write my own music, put my own chords and things I heard in my own head to different lyrics that I maybe felt, and I never, ever had to wait for anybody to write something for me."

As a teen, Keys spent time in Harlem, taking vocal lessons, developing a love for hip-hop, soul and R&B music and meeting her longtime collaborator and onetime boyfriend,  Kerry "Krucial" Brothers Jr. She also met music manager Jeff Robinson, who took her under his wing and showed her the ins and outs of the industry. She signed to Columbia Records when she was just 15 years old and graduated high school as valedictorian when she was 16. She enrolled in Columbia University while working on her music, but dropped out after a month because it became too grueling to juggle it all.

Keys struggled creatively with Columbia Records, eventually negotiating her way out of her record deal and signing with Arista Records in 1998, thanks largely to Clive Davis giving her more creative freedom. When Davis left Arista in 2000, Keys' in-progress album was shelved, and he signed her to his new label, J Records. Davis personally wrote to Oprah Winfrey asking her to have Keys perform on the show, and Winfrey booked her upon hearing "Fallin'." The song was released as a single on April 10, 2001, and made Keys a full-blown star.
