Chiefs training camp begins in a just a few days, but there’s enough time for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce to squeeze in one more golf tournament.

The duo will play in the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, from Friday to Sunday.

Kelce, who had a strong performance last month at “The Match,” continued to show off his golf prowess by winning Thursday’s Longest Drive competition.

Here is his monster 362-foot drive.

A few other former Chiefs players/coaches are taking part in the tournament including Marcus Allen, Mike Vrabel, Doug Pederson and Alex Smith.

Earlier this year, Smith told a hilarious story on SiriusXM NFL Radio about Kelce’s lack of preparation at last year’s tournament.

“Travis and I have been lucky enough to play together at the American Century Tahoe Tournament, and last year we played on the last day, so Sunday of the tournament,” Smith said. “The tournament’s a long week. You’re in Tahoe, it’s a good time. Everybody’s having a good time and you play golf every day. So for those of us that are very average golfers, by Sunday you are worn out, right? You’ve been burning the candle at both ends, especially if you’re Travis. And we’re playing with Pat. So it’s Pat, Travis and me.”

Smith said there was an announcement on a loudspeaker telling the trio to report to the first tee because they were due to start in 10 minutes.

Smith and Mahomes were at the first tee chatting but there was no Kelce.

“We’re hanging out and waiting for Travis to show up and again here comes on the loudspeaker: “Travis Kelce, can you please report to the first tee? So like Pat and I are joking, ‘Typical Trav,’” Smith recalled.

“Five, 10 minutes go by and again and another announcement: ‘Travis Kelce, your group is about to tee off.’ I mean, it’s like on the loudspeaker of a grocery store. Can you please get to the first tee.”

Ever the good teammate and friend, Mahomes went in search of Kelce.

“So Patrick has to take off to go find him,” Smith said. “And so he goes running off and he goes into the hospitality tent, where he finds Travis, who is in there partaking in some cereal for breakfast.”

Mahomes and Kelce then hustle back to the first tee to start the round of golf.

“Travis, I don’t think he’s hit a single golf ball. He just kind of got dressed and went and got a little breakfast. So it’s a tournament, it’s golfing in front of spectators like it’s embarrassing enough if you’re not very good, and so you warm up and prepare,” Smith said.

“Travis hasn’t had a freaking golf ball. He comes out and he’s kind of stretching on the first tee because he hasn’t swung the clubs since the day before. Then proceeds to pipe this ball right down the middle. It was unbelievable. Meanwhile, I’d warmed up for like 30 minutes and put it in the bunker.”

Preparation is overrated in golf, right? That’s a classic Kelce story.
