Newly-minted ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Alex Smith is heading into his first year working on NFL Sundays. And he believes one particular NFL division will shock people this year.

During Sunday’s NFL pregame coverage, Smith asserted that the NFC East is an “incredibly underrated” division. He argued that all of the teams have gotten better but believes that the Washington Football Team – his former team – will be “the class of the division” in 2021 thanks to quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

“I think this whole division is incredibly underrated,” Smith said. “Without a doubt, Washington is the class of the division. I love the Ryan Fitzpatrick pickup. I think (he’s) is going to have a big year.”

The NFC East was by far the worst division in the NFL last year. No team finished the season with a winning record and three teams finished with 10 losses or more.

Had Washington not beaten Philadelphia in Week 17 last year, the New York Giants would have made the playoffs with a 6-10 record.

But Alex Smith could very well be onto something here. While expectations for several of the NFC East teams aren’t exactly Super Bowl or bust, there’s strong indicators that at least a few of those teams will improve.

As Smith said, Ryan Fitzpatrick could have a big year in Ron Rivera’s offense. And with their defense, they could rank among the NFL’s best this season.

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a gut-wrenchingly close loss to the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Philadelphia has a new head coach and a new starter in Jalen Hurts, along with some weapons that could make some noise.

And who knows what the New York Giants will give us on a week-to-week basis?

Do you agree with Alex Smith here?
