Aldi, Hy-Vee and other chains recalled cream cheese spreads that might have salmonella

At least four supermarket chains, including Aldi and Hy-Vee, recalled store-brand cream cheese spreads that might have salmonella.

The cream cheese spreads come from Green Bay, Wisconsin’s Schreiber Foods.

Here’s what else you should know about these recalls before you spread them on your bagel:

Why are these cream cheese spreads being recalled?

According to Hornbacher’s announcement, “Schreiber Foods was informed by one of their suppliers that an ingredient which is used in several cream cheese spread formulas has the potential to contain salmonella.”

A supermarket chain executive confirmed to the Miami Herald that a Supermarket News’ quote from a Schnucks supermarket spokesperson was correct: Schreiber told vendor/distributor Topco Associates that Schreiber’s whey protein concentrate supplier had a salmonella problem.

When an ingredient supplier has a salmonella or listeria problem, that ripples to all the supplier’s customers and to that customer’s customers and so on.

As of Thursday, neither Schreiber nor Topco had referred to the recall on their websites or social media nor answered Miami Herald questions on how many retail store customers were affected.

Salmonella strikes about 1.35 million in the United States each year, the CDC says. About 26,500 of those people wind up in the hospital and about 420 die. Most people experience stomachaches, diarrhea and fever.
