Akron opens application window for fire chief; city only considering internal candidates

The search has begun for a new chief for the Akron Fire Department.

On Wednesday, the city announced that it has opened applications for the position. The job description and application are available here: https://tinyurl.com/AkronFireChief

Only internal candidates will be considered.

Applicants must have a minimum of ten years of fire and/or emergency management services command experience with a minimum of one year of experience at the level of fire deputy chief. Applications are due May 18.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced Fire Chief Joe Natko's retirement after 33 years of service at a news conference in March.

Deputy Fire Chief Steven Kaut has been serving as acting chief since Natko's retirement.
