Airport, Bedford enjoy success on golf course; Aulph belts four homers

MONROE – New Boston Huron won the first Huron League boys golf jamboree of the season recently.

That might make the Chiefs the early favorite in the league race, but it appears the favorite might change from week to week.

Airport, which placed fourth in the jamboree, tripped up Huron 167-171 Monday at Sandy Creek Golf Course.

“We hope to be competitive,” Airport coach Willie Hammar said. “We have potential. We showed it today.”

The league is exceptionally balanced this spring.

Airport may have finished fourth in the jamboree, but was just two strokes out of first. Five teams were bunched within four strokes of each other.

“This was a great confidence boost for us,” Hammar said.

Airport’s Jake Trythall earned medalist honors with a round of 37, Brayden Siders shot 40 and Aaron Maddick 42

Nick Kosiba was Huron’s low man with 39 while Aiden O'Kelley and Cameron Grant each carded a 43.

Hammar had high hopes coming into the match after his squad finished just one stroke out of first in the Wyandotte Scrambles Friday.

“It came right down to the end,” he said of Monday’s competition. “We were all waiting with bated breath.”

Tensions were high, but the level of sportsmanship was higher.

“Both teams are very tight,” Hammar said. “The guys know each other. The camaraderie between the players and coaches made it a fun event.”
