Airbnb wants you to live an entire year rent-free in a restored Sicilian home

Airbnb is choosing one lucky person to live rent-free for an entire year in a recently renovated Sicilian home.

The company plans on relocating a remote worker to the Italian village of Sambuca, along with their family, partner or a friend. The winner won’t just live at the formerly decayed and newly restored home — they’ll also host the location.

Airbnb’s “1 Euro House” campaign aims to boost tourism by bringing temporary residents to Sambuca, a rural community with a rich cultural heritage. While the population is only about 6,000, Sambuca was once a bustling community with a mix of Italian and North African culture and architecture. But the pandemic has halted tourism in the region. With “1 Euro House,” Airbnb hopes to revive the area by appealing to a younger audience.

“The beauty of this campaign is that it gives a second chance not just to an abandoned heritage home in the heart of our village — it’s also a second chance to the person who moves into it,” Leonardo Ciaccio, Mayor of Sambuca di Sicilia, said.

The winner will live in the home restored by the Italian architectural firm Studio Didea. The house’s ground floor has a living room and master bedroom with a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom. The first floor has a second living room, kitchen, workspace and mezzanine bedroom, while the upper floor has additional living space.

The host will get their pick of the bedroom while listing the remaining room on Airbnb — and keeping all earnings throughout their stay.

“We’re looking for someone who wants to live with the local population and participate in all the important moments of the community, from the grape harvest to olive picking, and we can’t wait to welcome whoever gets selected!” Ciaccio said.

To apply, visit Airbnb’s website and complete the application. Candidates must be 18 years old and able to move to Sambuca for three consecutive months, beginning June 30, 2022. Those proficient in English and/or Italian are encouraged to apply.
