Agents of SHIELD star's new movie confirms UK release date

Agents of SHIELD star Natalia Cordova-Buckley's psychological horror The Portrait has confirmed a UK release date.

The "slow-burn psychological horror" received its European premiere in a screening at Raindance Film Festival in September, and it has now had its UK release date confirmed as December 11.

The film will bypass cinemas and hit digital platforms including Google, Apple TV, Sky and Amazon on that date.

Cordova-Buckley stars as Sofia as she and partner Alex (Ryan Kwanten) recover from his brutal accident.

Sofia takes Alex to a remote villa in the countryside in the hopes of speeding up his rehabilitation – but once there, she becomes obsessed with a portrait that seems to resemble him.

As Sofia's fascination with the painting grows, increasingly disturbing accidents start befalling the pair and the house with "Hitchcockian eeriness", and she must decide if the portrait is possessed, or if she is losing her mind.

The film's trailer hints at Sofia's slow descent into madness.

"My mind's playing tricks on me," she tells someone down the phone – and later, another voice explains that the man in the painting "liked to hurt women".

"He loves his wounded birds," the same voice says. The trailer ends with Sofia exiting her bedroom and holding a knife, to be ominously confronted by Alex.

Joining the cast is Academy Award nominated actress and seasoned horror queen Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Dune). She appears as Sofia's mysterious relative, the "enigmatic cousin Mags", who seems to be one of the only people who knows about the man in the portrait.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Isidora Goreshter and Steffie Baik fill out the cast.

The Portrait was written by David Griffiths, and is Simon Ross's feature debut as both director and editor.

The Portrait will be released on digital platforms in the UK & Ireland on 11 December.
