Welcome to The Agenda! This weekly feature will cover all the public meetings in Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights that may be important to you.

A regular City Council meeting is on the books for Petersburg today. The meeting is open to the public and will be live-streamed. Among the items on the agenda is a discussion of the proposed FY25 budget calendar for the city and a presentation of "blighted properties" that are being proposed for demolition by Neighborhood Services staff.

School board meetings are on the books this week forPetersburg and Hopewell on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. In Petersburg, the school board meeting comes on the heels of the ongoing controversy surrounding the sudden and unexpected resignation of Superintendent Dr. Tamara Sterling.

While Sterling's resignation was announced on March 20th, she had been put on administrative leave by the board on February 23 and reportedly escorted out of the building. The board waited a week after Sterling first went on leave to make a public comment, which came only after repeated questions and requests for comment from The Progress-Index and other local media. At first, the board maintained that she was only on administrative leave, but Sterling posted on her LinkedIn account that she had left Petersburg in February and was now an “independent education professional.” It wasn't until March 20th that the board confirmed her resignation, after weeks of tension between the School Board and Petersburg residents. The Progress-Index's first attempt to obtain a full copy of Sterling's resignation letter to the board was rejected, after the board stated that the letter contains personnel information concerning identifiable individuals.

Hopewell City School Board meeting, 5:30 p.m., School Board Office, 103N.12th Avenue. This meeting is open to the public and in-person public comment will be accepted. Citizens are encouraged to provide written public comments prior to the meeting by emailing the Board Clerk, Michelle Ingram, at mingram@hopewell.k12.va.us.
