Adrian College, Siena Heights sports March 4-9

ADRIAN — The Adrian Collegewomen's hockey team punched its ticket to the Frozen Four for the first time since 2019 with a 4-1 win against Hamilton in Saturday's quarterfinal.

Sophomore Tia Lascelle netted a hat trick while Maya Roy had three assists, Une Bjelland had two assists, Sydnie Crockett had the opening goal and Saige Biddle had the assist.

Michaela O'Brien was strong in net with 20 saves, 11 of which came in the first period where Hamilton outshot the Bulldogs, 12-8. Adrian outshot Hamilton 25-9 the rest of the game.

"We were on our heels at times and stressed to the group to find our game," coach Shawn Skelley said. "In faceoffs we lacked big time the first period. In the second period faceoffs were like 15-5 (Adrian), so we made a huge adjustment there and I think that changed the tide of the game."

The Bulldogs will play at 8 p.m. Friday in the Frozen Four against host Wisconsin-River Falls. River Falls is ranked No. 1 in the nation and beat No. 3 Gustavus Adolphus, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Adrian lost to River Falls, 7-5, back on Nov. 30.

Middlebury, which beat Plattsburgh State, 2-0, and Elmira, which beat Amherst 2-1 in overtime, are on the other side of the bracket.

The men's hockey team took on rival Wisconsin-Stevens Point to open the men's tournament and came out with a 4-0 victory.

The Bulldogs (23-6-1) scored early with Jaden Shields scoring less than two minutes into the game and continued to tack onto the lead.

"We were good," coach Adam Krug said. "Last week we got punched in the mouth a little bit. Credit to our guys for buying in and listening to the message. We worked hard all week."

Casey Gerstein scored 11 minutes later to give Adrian a 2-0 lead going into the second where Jacob Suede scored early before Riley Murphy put the exclamation point on the game with an empty-netter in the third.

Shields had an assist, as did Zachary Heintz, Bradley Somers, Mathew Rehding and Cam Babiak.

Dershahn Stewart had an outstanding night in net, making 28 saves to hand the Pointers their first shutout since 2021.

The Bulldogs will now look for some revenge and a spot in the NCAA Division III Frozen Four against NCHA rival St. Norbert, which beat St. Olaf, 5-2.

ADRIAN

Softball

The Bulldogs went 8-2 to start the season in Florida.

Macee Schang took the 3-1 loss in the opener Sunday to Alfred going six innings and giving up three runs, on five hits and two walks while striking out five.

Adrian split Monday with an 8-1 win against Otterbein before falling to Lebanon Valley, 6-5.

Abbi Patton got the win, tossing all seven innings and giving up the one run, on five hits and a walk while striking out five. Karson Bagelmann went 3-for-4 with two steals and two runs while Ava Wolfe was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Maggie Leveille and Peyton Russell each hit doubles. Schang took the loss going all seven innings and allowing six runs, on nine hits and four walks while striking out three while Bagelmann, Meghan Lupu and Genna Marasco all had two hits with Bagelmann driving in two runs.

The Bulldogs then won seven-straight to wrap up the week with wins against Fontbonne (5-4), Penn State Behrend (7-6), Concordia Chicago (2-1), Johnson and Wales (8-7), New England College (16-2), Suffolk (10-2) and Wentworth (10-2).

Patton had four wins, tossing 18 innings with eight runs, 24 hits, six walks and nine strikeouts while Allie TenHove got a win going five innings and allowing one run, on nine hits and no walks while striking out five. Schang won twice and got a save, going 16 innings and allowing 13 runs, 10 earned, on 19 hits and four walks while striking out nine.

Bagelmann went 10-for-23 with two triples, 10 runs, eight steals and four RBIs while Taylor Gerhardt went 13-for-22 with 13 runs, three triples and eight RBIs. Lupu drove in six on 10 hits, two doubles and five steals.

Women's Lacrosse

A big third quarter led the Bulldogs to a 19-6 win against Illinois Tech on Tuesday.

Adrian led 7-5 at the half before outscoring the Scarlet Hawks, 8-0 in the third to pull away.

Mariana Miller had seven goals while Zoe Weber had five goals and two assists while Maggie Bean and Emily Crager each had two goals and an assist. Sarah Gross had two goals while Lucia Commare had a goal and an assist.

Megan Steffey made six saves while Hannah Reeves had two saves.

The Bulldogs fell the next day to North Central, 13-9, after the role was reversed and they were shutout in the third where the Cardinals turned a 7-6 halftime deficit into an 11-7 fourth quarter lead.

Commare had three goals while Crager had two and Weber and Bean each had a goal and an assist. Gross added a goal as well.

Baseball

The Bulldogs played one final game in California on Monday where they lost to Pomona-Pitzer, 7-4.

Onsted graduate Lincoln Lipinski got the start, going three innings and giving up one run, on two and a walk while striking out five. Adrian led 4-2 in the seventh where it gave up three runs and lost the lead.

Edward Wagner went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs while Joe Casale hit a home run as well with two RBIs. AJ Miranda and Andrew Clouse each hit a double while Jakob Charles had two hits.

Daniel Gutierrez got the win and Onsted graduate Broc Shoemaker closed it out for a three inning save as the Bulldogs beat Greensboro College, 8-2, on Thursday.

Gutierrez went six innings and gave up two runs, on four hits and three walks before Shoemaker slammed the door with three shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out five.

Charles went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, three RBIs and a steal while Jack Boike hit a double and scored two runs, Miranda had two hits with an RBI, as did Nic Bruder, who added two steals.

Jaxon Clark had a nice start in a 9-2 win against Rochester. He went six innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Miranda hit a grand slam while Travis Liford hit a triple.

The Bulldogs went off for 15 runs against Mayville to end the road trip with a 15-5 win. Charles was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, Ryan Davis drove in four runs and Edward Wagner went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Adrian used five pitchers with Landon Kozlowski getting the win going 1 2/3 innings and giving up a hit and walk while striking out two.

Wrestling

Carleigh Czerneski earned NCAA Division III All-American honors as she placed sixth at the NCWWC in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The 116-pounder went started with a loss and then battled to four-straight wins to advance to Day 2 where she went 0-2.

Golf

The Bulldogs men and women each took fifth at the Pfeiffer Invite in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

The women shot 656 and were led by Riley Kleck taking 11th overall with a 161. The men shot a 623 with Christian Long and Madison graduate Cameron Bozyk tied for seventh with a 151.

Women's Tennis

The Bulldogs had a strong spring break with a 3-0 mark with a 7-2 win against St. Mary's, a 6-3 win against Allegheny, an 8-1 win against Baldwin Wallace and a 6-1 win against Warner.

Hye Jin Elliott and Claire Earley each had four single wins while Elliott and Earley teamed up for four double wins. Ellie Himebauch and Liv Depies also had four doubles wins.

Men's Lacrosse

The Bulldogs fell to Westminster, 12-10, despite a late rally.

Adrian trailed 10-7 with 12:51 to go before netting three-straight to tie up the game, but Westminster netted the final two for the win.

Michael Jonas had of the three late goals as part of his five-goal game while Brandon Hoerauf and Jake Coakley each had two goals and an assist. Alec Winegar had the other goal and added an assist.

Adrian picked up a win Saturday against Capital, 9-7, behind a 3-0 fourth quarter for the Bulldogs.

Winegar and Riley Edwards had two goals while Jonas had a goal and two assists. Jack Messel, Trace Tidswell (Tecumseh), Tyler Ristau and Coakley had the other goals while Sam Sprangler made 12 saves in net.

Men's Volleyball

The Bulldogs swept Bethany College on Thursday, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20. before sweeping St. Norbert, 29-27, 25-17, 25-21 and Hiram, 25-16, 34-32, 25-15 on Saturday.

Chase Heuer had 17 kills, nine aces and 14 digs while Beck Fieldhouse had 17 kills and four aces. Andrew Gawrisch had 53 assists while Jacob Rembulant had 27 digs.

Men's Tennis

The Bulldogs opened the spring season with an 8-1 win against St. Mary's before falling to Allegheny, 5-4, and being swept by Southeastern, 7-0.

Sean Ruhf and Luke Holowinski got a pair of singles wins and doubles wins paired with Jackson Wilcox and Luca Coutinho.

The Bulldogs beat Wentworth, 6-3, with Ruhf and Coutinho and Holowinski and Wilcox winning doubles play and Ruhf adding a singles win before being swept by Warner, 7-0.

SIENA HEIGHTS

Wrestling

Bo Geibe earned NAIA All-American honors as she took fifth at 170 pounds at the NAIA Nationals at Jamestown University.

Geibe made the quarterfinals where she dropped to the consolation bracket and went 2-0.

Women's Basketball

The Saints fell in the WHAC championship game on Monday at Indiana Tech, 58-53.

SHU led 13-9 after the first, but Tech took control in the second and took a 32-24 lead into the half.

E'Anna Won had 14 points, three steals, three assists and three rebounds while Jillian Gelso had 11 points and three rebounds and Jakarri Alven had 10 points and four rebounds.

The Saints are 27-4 with three of the losses coming to Indiana Tech and they now await to see if they'll receive an at-large bid into the NAIA tournament.

Softball

The Saints started the week strong with a pair of wins Monday and splitting Tuesday. SHU beat Bethel, 4-2, Dakota Wesleyan, 6-5, and Fisher, 8-0, before falling to Mount Marty, 2-1.

Riley Hoover tossed a no-hitter against Fisher in five innings, striking out five and walking one.

Shyann Traux gave up four runs, three earned, on 15 hits and three walks while striking out seven in 13 1/3 innings.

Faith Breinager had three RBIs with two hits and a stolen base. Emma Marshall had five hits and an RBI and Sydnee Hazlett (Britton Deerfield) had two hits with a double and three RBIs. Eva Curtis added two RBIs with three hits, including a double.

SHU kept rolling into Thursday where it beat Fort Lauderdale, 4-1, and Roosevelt, 8-0.

Traux tossed a complete game against Fort Lauderdale, giving up a run, on three hits and one walk while striking out six. Jordan Green tossed a shutout against Roosevelt, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five.

Chappetta was each 3-for-6 on the day with two doubles and two RBIs while Kat Moreau was 2-for-7 with a triple and two runs, Breinager was 2-for-6 with two RBIs, Marshall was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and Avery Schellenberger was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Traux got another win Friday as she beat Ava Marie, 4-2, tossing seven innings and giving up two runs, on six hits and no walks while striking out two.

Chappetta went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs and Lee Clinton went 2-for-2 with a run and a steal.

SHU wrapped up Friday with a 2-1 loss to Grace. Green went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs, on eight hits, a walk and strikeout.

The Saints dropped the final two games in Florida to Keiser (6-0) and Florida National (6-2).

Traux took the loss to Keiser going 3 2/3 and giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out two. She also hit a double while Julie Hogston hit a triple.

Green took the loss in the finale, going 5 2/3 and giving up six runs, four earned, on nine hits and a walk. Chappetta went 2-for-4 with a triple while Ellie Thelen hit a double.

Men's Lacrosse

The Saints went back and forth with Ottawa on Monday, but fell in overtime, 14-13.

Eric Csizmadia had four goals and two assists while Joey Keck had four goals as well. Devin Plemmons had two goals and four assists while Brandon Hammer had two goals and an assist and Dillon Baldwin had a goal and an assist.

SHU then got win No. 1 on Wednesday against Benedictine, 11-8.

Csizmadia had five goals and two assists while Hammer had two goals and an assist and Plemmons had a goal and two assists. Connor Roeske had a goal and an assist while Lachlan Conway each added Sean Jablonski a goal.

Jakob Moske made seven saves in the win.

Women's Lacrosse

The Saints fell to Warner on Monday, 16-11.

Jenna Allie had four goals and an assist while Danielle Turner had three goals, Emily Pringle had one goal and two assists and Sophia Baugh had a goal and an assist.

Tecumseh graduate Grace Holland had a goal, as did Kallei Brown.

SHU also lost Thursday, 14-6, at Keiser.

Allie and Emily Pringle each had three goals.

Baseball

The Saints dropped both ends of a doubleheader Monday against Fort Lauderdale, 10-7 and 6-3.

Chase Molnar took the loss in Game 1 while Nick Tiller, Jacob Jackson and Aidan Grinstead each had two hits while Ty Schroeder hit a double. Garrett Smith took the loss in Game 2 while Cole VanWasshenova had two hits with a home run while and Kenny Layman hit a double.

SHU split on Thursday with a 9-4 win against Dordt before falling to Warner, 3-0.

Andrew Baum closed out the win with three shutout innings, giving up a hit and striking out two after Luc Olsen went four innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits and struck out two.

VanWasshenova had two doubles and an RBI while Brayden Hill hit a double and Gino Hutchinson had two hits with an RBI.

Ben Weadock took the loss in Game 2 as he gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out four. SHU was held to two hits.

The Saints fell 6-4 in Friday's doubleheader opener against Concordia-Nebraska. SHU gave up five runs in the third, which was too much to overcome as Adam Wilding took the loss going seven innings and giving up six runs, on seven hits and five walks while striking out three.

VanWasshenova went 3-for-3 with three runs, a double and RBI while Jacob Jackson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Cole Mason was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hill added a triple.

SHU defeated Calumet to wrap up Friday, 8-4, with Brandon Biggerstaff getting the win going four innings and giving up three runs, on six hits and three walks while striking out five.

Hutchinson drove in five runs on a home run and a triple while Mason was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Brock Olmstead was 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI and Nick Tiller had a pair of hits.

The Saints lost to Cumberlands, 8-7, to wrap up the spring break trip.

Molnar went 3 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three before Aidan Nighswander (Britton Deerfield) gave up a run in 2 2/3 innings on five hits and a walk while striking out one.

Olmstead was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI while Hutchinson was 4-for-4 with a double and RBI. Hill and Jackson each added doubles.

Men's Volleyball

The Saints won their third-straight match Tuesday by beating Aquinas in four sets on the road, 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19.

Marc Arsenault had 12 kills, four digs and three aces while Jonathan Stovring had 11 kills and three aces and Daniel Rua had nine kills, three aces and three digs.

Zak Tucker guided the offense with 43 assists, eight aces, five blocks, four kills and two digs and Erancesc Baza had seven digs.
