ADM wins two titles, breaks multiple records at Drake, boys soccer ranked #3

You’d be hard-pressed to find a school that had a better week than ADM. (Note: Events covered April 23-29)

Girls Track

Competing in nearly a dozen events, the ADM girls shined brightest as a group at the Drake Relays on April 25-27.

Running 13 seconds faster than at the state meet last year in the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Hannah Desmarais, Aniston Tollari, Madi James and Brecken Morse set a new school record of 3 minutes 58.22 seconds. That placed eighth for the day.

Also rewriting the school recordbook, the talents of Haley Nelson, Isabella Smyth, Elise Coghlan, Josi Dufoe crossed the finish line at 1:05.59 for third place in the preliminary round for the shuttle hurdle relay. They found yet another gear later in the finals, cutting their time to 1:04.86 for second place behind Dowling Catholic.

And the 4x100 team was at its peak form with a season-best time of 49.69 seconds with Calli Seehase, Jada Grove, Jordis Ichelson and Dufoe for 12th place overall.

Boys Track

ADM came into the Drake Relays with a big spotlight. That comes with the territory of having two sprinters that will be playing football in the fall at the state’s biggest colleges — and the hype was more than justified.

Running in the finals of the 100-meter dash, Aiden Flora and Brevin Doll ran nearly in-sync with times of 10.75 and 10.76 seconds for second and third place. That momentum also helped carry the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams to school records and Drake titles, becoming clear favorites for the state crown.

With the aid of Tyler Gelhaar and Zach Lohmann as well, ADM set a new school record of 41.38 seconds in the 4x100 — a new Drake Relays record as well. Competing with the top Class 4A teams, all of 0.54 second separated places 1-4.

After finishing second in the prelims of the 4x200, that same team with Grant Rychnovsky subbing Gelhaar won gold in the finals with less than 0.40 seconds of separation from fourth place.

Like Doll and Flora, Lohmann’s contributions weren’t limited to relays as he also broke a solo school record after placing seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 53.28 seconds. That puts him in the second poll position among Class 3A ranks. His shuttle hurdle teammates Joseph Kitzinger, Luke Krantz, Keaton Kier helped bring ADM an eighth place mark at 1:00.41 for third among 3A teams.

Boys Soccer (11-1)

Not only have the Tigers won six games in a row, it’s how they’re winning that has the state on high alert as ADM sits ranked third in Class 3A.

The Tigers bagged four wins this week, first with a 6-0 conference win over Winterset (1-9) on April 27. Two days later, they booked a pair of 1-0 wins over Fort Madison (6-5) and Pella (5-7). That makes ADM 5-0 in games decided by one goal. The team improved to 5-1 in the Raccoon River with a 3-0 win Monday over Bondurant-Farrar.

Girls Soccer (5-6)

Winners of three of the past four games, the Tigers took games from both Winterset (5-5) and Bondurant-Farrar (5-7) this week. That was headlined by seven goals scored across the pair from Jada Grove to move into the conference lead with 15 goals this season.
