Adam Sandler's Netflix movie lands fresh RT scoreNetflix

Adam Sandler's latest movie Spaceman has garnered a fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes after its first reviews.

The upcoming Netflix film centres on an astronaut named Jakub (Sandler), who realises the marriage he left behind on Earth six months ago might not be waiting for him when he returns.

In a desperate attempt to fix things with his wife (Maestro's Carey Mulligan), Jakub works with a mysterious creature from the beginning of time (voiced by Paul Dano) to try and "make sense of what went wrong before it's too late".

The first reviews have been recorded on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the film currently sitting at 69% from 26 reviews.

These scores will likely change after the movie arrives on Netflix on March 1, but it's a promising start.

Here's what some of the critics have been saying:

TheWrap

"Smart, entrancing, and filed firmly under interesting, Spaceman is a conversation-starting meditation on the human condition made as a piece of art for audiences to experience rather than being a film made with an audience in mind."

Empire

"Come for the wise alien spider, stay for Adam Sandler at his sombre best in this strange, heartfelt sci-fi drama. Here’s hoping he continues to push himself to new highs."

The Hollywood Reporter

"The Netflix feature has its share of the usual narrative glitches — communication system failures, corporate meddling, life-threatening turbulence — it’s primarily a story of marital discord and the wakeup call and atonement of a man too fixated on his dreams to see what’s most precious to him. That, in a nutshell, is the limitation of this engrossing but under-powered sci-fi drama."

IndieWire

"Beyond the physical demands of the role, Spaceman brings no new shade to some of the glummer Sandler personas we’re already familiar with. [Director Johan Renck]’s film leaves him quite literally lost in space with nowhere to go, and rather than leave us with new perspectives on space travel or marital discord or an awe-eyed curiosity about either, we leave with a shrug."

Spaceman will be released on Netflix on March 1, 2024.
