Across the Spider-Verse theory suggests dark Spider-Man twist

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is bringing more Spidey multiverse madness to our screens, and the new movie might have more in common with Spider-Man: No Way Home than you think.

From the two excellent trailers released so far, we know the Into the Spider-Verse sequel will see Miles Morales pitted against other Spider-Men from across the multiverse, led by Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099, when they clash over how to handle a new threat.

What we don't know yet is exactly why Miles is facing off with the other Spideys, but a new fan theory from Reddit user meme_abstinent has suggested a compelling reason why the face-off is happening.

And we're getting some serious No Way Home vibes from it.

We know that the Spot is in the sequel, but from the latest trailer, he doesn't quite seem like a supervillain. The Spot looks like he hasn't exactly mastered his powers, which may have come from the events of the first movie (but that's a whole other theory).

The theory argues that the threat that brings conflict between Miles and Miguel is how to deal with the Spot. If Miles is the first Spider-Man to come across the Spot, but is unable to stop him, maybe Miguel spots a dangerous threat to the multiverse rather than a bumbling potential villain and chooses to stop him – permanently.

"Miguel, in the comics, is much more okay with death than Peter. He’s generally more violent and will kill more often," they state.

"Since storytelling usually dictates the hero can’t stop the villain in their first encounter, I suspect Miles is going to blame himself for not stopping The Spot the first time. Had he, and Miguel would never have found The Spot and decided to kill him."

Assuming that Miguel is the head of the Spider-People, he's potentially charged them with killing the Spot to protect the multiverse, which could be why Miles finds himself on the run from them in the latest trailer as he's attempting to protect the Spot.

What's more, the theory concludes with just how this conflict ends up folding into the already-confirmed third movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse: "It definitely has to end with The Spot making the multiverse collapse even more since this was originally a two-parter."

It's a sound theory and could well play out in the sequel, although it could end up feeling a bit too familiar to No Way Home which might be why it won't happen.

If you need reminding, No Way Home saw Peter Parker take responsibility for messing up a spell that brought different villains into his world. Rather than sending them back to their fates in their own world (as Doctor Strange wanted), Peter attempted to cure the villains to help them avoid their fates.

Should Across the Spider-Verse follow a similar path, we're sure that the filmmakers have come up with a fresh enough angle, given how great the first movie turned out. But there's also every chance that this theory – as solid as it sounds – ends up being off the mark.

Whatever happens, you better believe we're there for Across the Spider-Verse's opening night to find out.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is released in cinemas on June 2.
