Across the Spider-Verse star's new movie confirms September US release date

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star Jake Johnson's new film has landed a release date in the US - and it's only a few months away.

Self Reliance, which has Johnson serving as writer and director as well as lead actor, will land on American streaming service Hulu on September 8. A UK date or broadcaster hasn't been announced yet, but seeing as Hulu is owned by Disney, it could potentially come to the House of Mouse's service there.

The film focuses on Tommy, a man who accepts the offer of a million dollars if he can survive a game where hunters are out to kill him. He finds what he thinks is a perfect loophole: the would-be killers can only attack him when he's alone. However, none of his friends or family believe the game is real so are reluctant to be by his side 24/7.

Beyond Johnson, the cast includes Anna Kendrick, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg, Christopher Lloyd, Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire and How I Met Your Mother's Wayne Brady.

Samberg recently joined Johnson as another multiversal variant of everyone's favourite wall-crawling superhero in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Rather than playing some version of Peter Parker, however, Samberg played Scarlet Spider/Ben Reilly, a character from the famous Clone Saga in the comics.

Will Samberg return for the third film, which directly continues from the events of Across the Spider-Verse? We'll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, the trailer for the second season of Johnson's comedy Minx was recently released.

The show was cancelled by HBO after its first season aired, while season 2 was already in production, and was rescued by Starz. The new network will premiere season 2 next month.

Self Reliance will premiere on Hulu in the US on Septembr 8, while a UK release platform and window are yet to be confirmed. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is out now in cinemas.
