School is back in session. Five grueling months after the conclusion of its freshman season, Abbott Elementary is back now for sophomore year, and it's already at the head of its class after two historic Emmy wins. No longer the new kids on campus, Quinta Brunson and her crew of bizarre educators with hearts of gold are ready to tackle a new school year.

The last time we were in the underfunded halls of Philadelphia's Willard R. Abbott Elementary School, an unsanctioned school field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo put our normally wayward teachers at their own crossroads to growth. Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), the elder statesman at the school, has an existential crisis about her future after finding out a zoo animal she’s known for years had recently retired due to old age. The detrimentally conciliatory Janine Teagues (Brunson) takes a break from her longtime boyfriend Tariq (Zack Fox) after she decides to continue making an impact on the kids’ lives at Abbott Elementary and not follow him to New York City to chase his dreams of recording an anti-drug rap album. To be fair, the Abbott students loved him rapping to them about potentially dying if they take drugs. He could be on his way to a drug-free Chance the Rapper-esque stardom, but I digress.

One of the biggest surprises we all saw coming was substitute teacher (and expert gardener) Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams) informing Janine he’s returning to Abbott as a full-time teacher, setting up the cutest work relationship since Pam and Jim’s relationship on The Office went from inside jokes and pining glances to holy matrimony. While Janine and Gregory (Jaregory? Granine?) seem inevitable, shedding herself of Tariq is truly going to set the stage for her to blossom into the woman she’s meant to be first.

“I feel like this is a young woman who needs to know herself before she can know anyone else, whether that be Tariq again, some random guy [or] Gregory,” Brunson told TVLine. She has to take her own kind of self-love journey, and I think that’s what we’ll start to see with her. That doesn’t sound romantic, but it can be very romantic.”

By the looks of the hilarious Season 2 trailer, the teachers will be facing off with student-to-teacher ratio imbalance, cafeteria mayhem, and a principal in Ava Coleman (Janelle James) who has no problem in calling her teachers dorks in front of students. With ABC renewing the show for a gargantuan 22-episode second season, this release schedule will keep you up to date on when you can catch them all.
