95-year-old actress Gina Lollobrigida to run for Italian senate

Italy is headed for new parliament elections in September and a cinema icon is putting herself on the ballot.

Gina Lollobrigida is running for senate to represent the city of Latina for the Sovereign and Popular Italy Party, a newly formed leftist coalition.

The actress turned 95 on July 4.

“I was just tired of hearing politicians arguing with each other without ever getting to the point,” Lollobrigida said in an interview over the weekend. “I will fight for the people to decide, from health to justice. Italy is in bad shape, I want to do something good and positive.”

Lollobrigida is most-known for her turn as Esmerelda in 1956′s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

She previously tried to win a 1999 election for a seat in the European Union parliament.
