YOU KNOW YOU'RE supposed to drink plenty of water each day. Still, guzzling all that H2O isn’t always easy—or delicious— for those who don’t enjoy swilling water like it’s a part-time job.
Plus, sometimes rather than opt for an electrolyte-rich sports drink, you just want to make your water do more work for you and “boost” the beverage with some added nutrition benefits. That’s where water flavorings and enhancers come to help.
These drops or powders add a splash of flavor to the beverage and/or enhance water’s nutrition. But of course, some can be loaded with unnecessary ingredients and a ton of added sugars. Luckily, says Jamie Nadeau, R.D.N., there are so many different products that can make water more appealing to drink that have low amounts of or no sugar. “From drops to packets to electrolyte powders, there really is something available for everyone to up your water intake,” she says.
And as Mary Wirtz, R.D., consultant for Mom Loves Best notes, water flavoring products are ubiquitous at most grocery retailers these days, and you can readily purchase them online. “The goal of these products is to help enhance the flavor profile of water and some brands also boast additional electrolytes for adequate hydration,” she says.
Here are 8 great water flavorings, according to dietitians.
Energy Drops
“Hydration is so important for health, digestion, and training and performance,” says Lexi Moriarty, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D.
She says Buoy’s Hydration Drops add a nice herbal essence to water, are one of the go-to recs she gives to her clients.
"It's purposefully unflavored which means sugar-free, stevia, and sweetener-free, so it makes for a great option that you can use daily or even multiple times per day.”
Sweet Tea Liquid Water Enhancer
Pallini Winnifred, R.D.N., who is the in-house advisor at FitDominium, particularly likes these water drops in the Sweet Tea flavor, but there are many flavors to choose from running the gamut from Berry Grape to Strawberry Kiwi. “This product contains no artificial sweeteners, no high fructose corn syrup, and no gluten,” she says, adding that the product also has electrolytes, which can be beneficial to hydration.
Raspberry Lemonade
Wirtz says that True Lemon products are sweetened with cane sugar and stevia and contain 10 calories per serving. “This is the perfect water flavoring option for any individuals looking to add more flavor into their hydration routine. These products are free from artificial sweeteners, colors, and dyes,” she says.
Hydration Multiplier
Nadeau says this is her favorite electrolyte powder on the market. “I recommend something like liquid IV if you've worked out intensely for longer than an hour, you're dehydrated, or maybe you work outdoors in the sun all day,” she says, noting that these electrolyte packets are packed with Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B12, and vitamin C along with electrolytes to hydrate you if you need them.
“This isn't something to replace a regular glass of water, but can be super helpful if you need electrolytes replenished.”
Sport Hydration
Wirtz says Nuun Hydration a fizzy and hydrating beverage that is low in calories at 15 calories per serving. It's another excellent choice for electrolyte replacement. This product has sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, she says, important electrolytes that are lost through sweat when you exercise. “Furthermore, this product is certified through Informed Choice, meaning it is third party-tested for purity.”
Joyful Hydration
“Another one for the people who find water boring — Plink is more flavor than function, but these dissolving tablets are similar to Nuun, but I prefer the taste,” says Moriarty. “They’re low-calorie, sugar flavor tablets with one gram of sugar.”
Strawberry Guava
“SweetLeaf is sweetened with monk fruit extract and contains zero calories per serving,” says Wirtz. “This product is great for individuals who are adhering to a lower carbohydrate diet or want to moderate their calorie intake,” she continues.
Blackberry Lemonade
“This product contains no artificial sweeteners and is low in calories,” says Winnifred, who especially likes the Blackberry Lemonade flavor.
