Back in the day, when you heard the term “luxury car,” you probably would have thought of Chryslers, Audis or Lincolns. While many of these vehicles are still considered high-end by today’s standards, there’s a lot more to what makes a car “luxury” than ever before.

One of the obvious ones is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). Today’s luxury vehicles can easily cost $80,000 to $200,000.

But it’s not just the price tag. The best luxury cars also use high-quality materials — both on the interior and exterior — and boast features that you just can’t find in cheaper models. From audio systems and telematics to advanced safety features and transmission systems, there are just some things you can’t get from lower-priced options.

If you’re retired and are thinking about buying a luxury car, you’re probably wondering which one is best. While everyone’s needs and preferences are different, here are some of the top models out there, according to automotive experts.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mercedes-Benz has been synonymous with luxury for more than a century now. So it’s no surprise that they make this list.

“The epitome of luxury, the S-Class offers unparalleled comfort, advanced technology and a smooth ride,” said John Lin, a seasoned automotive expert and owner of JB Motor Works. “Its spacious interior and premium features make it perfect for leisurely drives.”

As for the ride itself?

“Think of it like riding on a cloud: It’s super smooth and quiet, which is perfect for those long road trips retirees love,” added Rene Ymzon, an engineer and industry expert at Advanced Motion Controls. “They’ve put a ton of effort into making sure the ride is serene, with fancy suspension and noise-canceling tech. Plus, it’s loaded with safety features like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control to give you extra peace of mind.”

Other high-end features include a slick infotainment system with a large touchscreen, expert navigation controls and voice commands. It even includes a top-notch audio system from Burmester.

“Prices start at around $94,000,” Ymzon said, “but, if you want all the bells and whistles, you can expect to pay more.”

Tesla Model S

A newer player to the field of luxury vehicles — and one that’s worth checking out — is the Tesla Model S.

“The Tesla Model S is like the perfect blend of luxury and cutting-edge tech, especially if you’re into being environmentally friendly,” Ymzon said. “It’s electric, so you get that instant power without any engine noise, making for a seriously smooth ride.”

The interior is spacious, so it’s easy to get in and out of, too. Plus, it has a large touchscreen that essentially serves as your command center — all the comfort and convenience you deserve in retirement. And if you want a more carefree driving experience, Tesla’s Autopilot has you covered with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and more.

Prices start at around $80,000, but you could easily spend over $100,000, depending on the upgrades.

Lexus LS

Lexus is another of those luxury car brands that wealthy retirees seeking elegance and a smooth ride should consider.

“The Lexus LS is known for its exceptional build quality, reliability and comfort,” said Carl Rodriguez, owner and head of logistics at NX Auto Transport. It also has a spacious interior with all of the features you need for a luxury experience.

“One unique feature of the LS is its available Executive Package, which includes features like a rear-seat entertainment system, ottoman-style rear seats with massage function, and a 23-speaker Mark Levinson sound system,” Rodriguez said.

The Lexus LS starts at around $75,000 but can easily go past $100,000.

Lexus LS Hybrid

For retirees seeking better fuel efficiency — especially for long road trips — the Lexus LS Hybrid could be a better choice. It’s reliable, gets great gas mileage and offers a smooth ride.

“Inside, it’s all about the details. The interior is plush and designed to make you feel like you’re in your little sanctuary,” Ymzon said. “The infotainment system is easy to use, with a big touchscreen and voice recognition. And let’s not forget about the top-notch sound system.”

Then there are the advanced safety features — like forward collision warning — to keep you and any passengers safe.

The hybrid goes for around $90,500, but you’ll pay more if you customize it to your exact specifications.

Audi A8

While the Audi A8 might not be quite as eye-catching as some of the other luxury vehicles on this list, it’s still a high-end vehicle with a sleek profile, advanced features — like the MMI infotainment system and the virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster — and a comfortable interior consisting of premium materials.

“The A8 also offers a range of driver assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist,” Rodriguez said. “Prices for the Audi A8 start around $85,000 and can exceed $100,000 for higher trim levels.”

Genesis G90

“The Genesis G90 is a relatively new entrant to the luxury car market but has quickly gained recognition for its value and quality,” Rodriguez said.

Its interior is spacious and elegant and made with only the highest-quality materials. It also has features like a 22-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and Nappa leather upholstery for maximum comfort and sophistication.

Rodriguez added, “The G90 also comes standard with a suite of advanced safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection.”

This vehicle starts at around $75,000.

BMW 7 Series

“For those who enjoy a bit of sportiness with their luxury, the BMW 7 Series delivers an engaging driving experience without compromising on comfort,” Lin said. “Its advanced infotainment system and premium sound system are sure to impress.”

This model is also spacious and gets good gas mileage. Its starting MSRP is around $90,000, but you also can go with a hybrid model. The price tag might be higher, but the better gas mileage might well make it worth your while.

Porsche Panamera

Porsche is another highly regarded automobile manufacturer specializing in luxury vehicles. While it’s hard to go wrong here, the Panamera is one vehicle you won’t want to miss. This model has an understated elegance, perfect for wealthy retirees who want to keep a low profile while on the road.

“The Panamera combines the performance of a sports car with the luxurious amenities of a high-end sedan,” Lin said. “Its sleek design and powerful engine make it a thrilling choice for retirees who still crave excitement behind the wheel.”

It costs anywhere from $90,000 to $200,000, depending on the upgrades.
