Jefferson Shreve wins 6th Congressional District GOP primary

The Associated Press declared Jefferson Shreve the winner of the Republican primary for Indiana's 6th Congressional District Tuesday night.

Shreve, who ran for mayor of Indianapolis in 2023, led the seven Republican candidates with 28% of the vote followed by state Rep. Mike Speedy and political newcomer Jamison Carrier both with about 22% of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Other candidates Tuesday included state Sen. Jeff Raatz, former state Rep. John Jacob, former state Sen. Bill Frazier and Darin Childress.

Shreve will face Democrat Cynthia Wirth and Libertarian James Sceniak in November. The Storage Express founder is likely to become the district’s next Congressman, as Pence defeated Wirth in 2022 by 35 percentage points.

It’s also the first open election in the 6th District since Indiana lawmakers in 2021 changed the boundaries to include southern portions of Marion County. The 6th District includes southern Indianapolis townships and then stretches east to Indiana's border with Ohio.

Since the start of the year, candidates largely campaigned on border security, the Second Amendment and the economy. Shreve and Speedy especially have taken swipes at each other’s past votes and proposals, including Shreve’s mayoral public safety proposal on guns and Speedy’s past votes to raise the state’s gas tax.

Republicans running in the 6th District primary have relied on their personal wealth more so than in years past, loaning their campaigns millions. As of April, Shreve almost entirely self-funded his congressional campaign with a $4.5 million loan. State Rep. Speedy follows Shreve closely with a $1.3 million loan and Jamison Carrier with a $750,000 loan.

This story will be updated as election results are released Tuesday.
