Combining the portability of a circular saw with the accuracy of a table saw, track saws are one of the most useful power tools a woodworker can have in their collection. Also known as “plunge saws,” track saws look similar to circular saws, but are designed to run on top of an aluminum track—with the blade riding along the edge—placed directly on top of the wood being cut. This blade can also “plunge” into the center of a workpiece if you prefer, which is the main difference between it and circular saws, which must start at the edge. The track provides a sturdy, straight guide for the saw blade, which is perfect for performing long, accurate cuts. This portability allows you to bring the saw to the workpiece—instead of hauling large sheets to a fixed table saw—and is especially convenient for those that frequently work on remote job sites away from their workshop.

Track saws are available in both corded and battery-powered models, and while they’re significantly more expensive than circular saws, lower-cost options are available. You’ll likely end up sacrificing features like brushless motors, hard-sided storage cases, metal components, and cordless power with these budget-friendly options, but they’re still acceptable for performing the majority of basic DIY projects. Keep in mind that many models don’t include a track, which you then need to purchase separately, so a full kit might be the most cost-effective option.

For a quick look at the best track saws as determined by our evaluations, look just below. Or keep scrolling for more aspects and features to keep in mind, plus our full reviews of these and other models.

The Best Track Saws

What to Consider

Finding the right track saw comes down to blade size, power, and speed. In order to select the best tool for you and your specific task, make sure you understand these factors.

Power Source

Like most power tools these days, track saws are available in both corded and cordless models. Corded options are more common—as evidenced by the fact that most of our picks fall into this category—and while they’re typically cheaper, they’re less convenient if you don’t have an electrical outlet close by. Cordless track saws run on rechargeable batteries, which means you can work practically anywhere (and unhindered by an extension cord), but they can lack some of the power of corded saws. Also, batteries naturally have a limited run time. If you don’t have a spare on hand, you might find yourself stuck mid-project.

Power Measurement

The main difference between corded and battery-powered versions—other than portability—is how their power is measured. Corded units measure their power in amps, and higher amp motors can handle larger loads without overheating. Units with 10-12 amps are fine middle-of-the road options for the average DIY-er, while larger machines run as high as 20 amps. Battery-powered track saws measure power in voltage, with 18-volt versions being the most common for general use and 36-volt models for heavy-duty projects.

Track Length

Whether a saw includes its own track (sometimes called a “guide rail”) or you’re buying one separately, consider its length before purchasing. Make sure it’s short enough to fit in your workspace comfortably and also long enough to sufficiently span your workpiece. The most common length is 55 inches, but longer options exist. Also, since most tracks are designed to connect with additional sections, you can always buy more if your workpiece requires it. Should you decide to purchase a saw that doesn’t include a track because you already have one on hand, just make sure the two are compatible.

Speed

Regardless of power source, the best track saws offer variable speeds, commonly ranging from 2,000 to 6,300 rpm. As a general rule, use lower speeds when cutting hardwoods, and reserve higher rpm for getting the cleanest cut on softer woods. Keep in mind that using higher speeds than necessary increases the wear and tear on your tools. Plus, it’s easier to control a saw at lower speeds, which means you’re more likely to achieve a precise, smooth cut.

Blade Size

Most track saw blades measure 6.5 inches in diameter, but larger and smaller options are available. The larger the blade, the thicker the wood it can cut through. Keep in mind that this depth isn’t a fixed measurement and, like circular saws, track saws have adjustment knobs to set different cut depths.

Cut Type

Most track saws are also capable of cutting wood at a diagonal, called a bevel cut, using an adjustment knob to lock in the preferred angle. In addition to the common 45-degree bevel stop, more functional models can tilt and lock in a wide range of angles, up to 48 degrees. All of the options below can perform bevel cuts of at least 45 degrees.

Tool Weight

Track saws range in weight, from compact 10-pound options to heavy-duty units that weight as much as 30 pounds. If you plan on traveling with your saw frequently, and can afford to compromise on some power, consider going with a lighter option.

How We Evaluated

The writer for the initial version of this review, Bobbi Dempsey, is the former owner of a construction and property maintenance business and a passionate DIYer, She has used a variety of saws, including track saws, which she especially likes for cabinet, door, and shelving projects, and drew on these experiences when evaluating models and compared the power source, blade size, speed range, and features of each saw.

For this most recent update, reviewer Alex Rennie combed through the current offerings of major online retailers like Amazon and Lowe’s, and surveyed legitimate review sites to ensure that he wasn’t missing any new or popular options. “I then cross-checked my existing picks with their current listings, checking to see if any were outdated or no longer available,” he writes. “As a result, I replaced the previous top pick, the Festool 576708 TS 55, with its updated version, the Festool 576012 TS 55. This new model includes 55 inches of track as well as its own hard-sided storage box, all for just $100 more. I also removed the Triton 1400W Plunge Track Saw, due to its relatively high price, then added the Evolution Multi-Material Cutting Circular Track Saw Kit as our Best Value pick; it provides more features—and its own track—for $200 less. As a fan of Makita power tools, and the proud owner of two of their circular saws, I felt confident in adding two of their track saws as well.”

Plunge Cut Track Saw TS 55

I used Festool track saws while working as part of a carpentry crew and found their rock-solid reliability and accuracy-focused design to be worth the high price tag. This model has twice the speed of previous units and provides the torque necessary to perform extremely quick and—more importantly—laser smooth cuts. A built-in riving knife also helps avoid kickbacks, boosting control even more. A handy splinter-guard helps reduce tearout, and the flat housing allows for cuts that are nearly flush against walls. This saw is also impressively well-built and durable, so it can withstand heavy use day after day on a busy jobsite.—Alex Rennie

Multi-Material Cutting Circular Track Saw Kit

If you’re the type that doesn’t need something fancy to get the job done, consider this track saw from Evolution. Its large 7.25-inch blade makes cuts as deep as 2.5 inches, though its maximum speed might leave something to be desired. The kit includes a track, which makes it a great deal for the price. However, some Amazon customers felt the track was too short and didn’t like that it comes in three individual pieces.—Alex Rennie and Bobbi Dempsey

10-Amp Sidewinder Circular Track Saw

Despite its low price, this 6.5-inch Wen saw doesn’t compromise on functionality, featuring 45-degree bevel and plunge cut capability. With a cut capacity of up to 2.33 inches, you can easily tackle a wide range of projects, and the 10-amp motor is still capable of 5500 RPM. Weighing roughly 13.5 pounds, this saw is also convenient to take wherever you need to go, whether that’s into the backyard or to a remote jobsite. For about $100, this saw is relatively inexpensive—but factor in the additional cost of tracks, clamps, and any other accessories you want. None are included with your purchase.—Alex Rennie

XPS01PTJ 18-Volt Cordless Plunge Circular Saw Kit

I’ve been using cordless Makita tools for years—from drills to circular saws—and this track saw is a great example of why they’re so great. First of all, you’re getting two 18-volt batteries instead of just one, which is always a huge plus. Not only do they combine to provide 36 volts of power for the saw itself, but if you already have other Makita power tools, you can beef up your collection even more. A variable speed control dial adjusts the rpms from 2,500 to 6,300, making it useful for a wide range of tasks and materials. I also appreciate the white lettering and black background of the depth adjustment scale, as opposed to other machines without contrasting numbers. Two hard cases ensure all the components of the kit are safe and organized when not in use.—Alex Rennie

6.5-Inch Track Saw with Plunge Action

If your priority is ripping through cuts extremely quickly—without sacrificing quality—this Bosch saw and its 6,250 rpm is a great choice. A variable speed dial adjusts the speed if you need to crank it down for dense woods, and the handy plunge action lets you start in the center of a surface—like a wood floor or countertop. Features like a single bevel point (so you don’t have to reposition depending on cut type) and a swiveling dust collection port that keeps your vacuum hose out of the way make this saw especially user-friendly.—Alex Rennie and Bobbi Dempsey

SP6000J1 Plunge Circular Saw Kit

With a saw, 48T carbide blade, storage case, and 55-inch guide rail, this Makita kit has everything you need to get started right away. I’m a huge fan of the rubberized handles on Makita power tools like this one, ensuring that you always maintain a solid, sturdy, and comfortable grip during operation. The electronic speed control helps keep those cuts smooth and splinter free. And with a -1 to 48-degree bevel capability, the SP6000J1 is well-suited for a range of projects. A lock-lever gives the saw a sturdy hold on the rail, which is important for performing those bevels properly. Thanks to the 11⁄ 16-inch wall clearance, this machine is also convenient for use in tight spaces.—Alex Rennie

At only 9 inches high and 7.9 inches wide, it’s perfect for use in tight or awkward areas and, thanks to the.4-inch clearance, is especially convenient for those close-to-wall cuts. Even though its 5.5-inch blade is smaller than those on the other saws on our list, it’s still able to achieve 2 inches of cut depth, and it plunges and bevels just like the big boys.
