60-year-old man dies in crash after striking several utility poles, SC officials say
A 60-year-old man died in a crash after striking several utility poles along a highway, a South Carolina coroner’s office said.
The crash caused a power outage in the area and ignited several grass fires, according to a news release from the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.
The man was driving on Highway 184 in Iva at around 6 p.m. on Dec. 28 when his 2004 Chevrolet truck went off the left side of the road and struck the utility poles, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The vehicle also struck a fence before coming to a stop, the coroner’s office said.
The coroner’s office identified the man as Jeffrey Thomas Berryman, of Martin, Georgia.
Berryman was not wearing a seat belt, the release says.
First responders treated him on scene and brought him to a local hospital. He died at the hospital due to “multiple traumatic injuries” and “blunt force trauma,” the release says.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Iva is about 115 miles northwest of Columbia.
An obituary for Berryman could not be found online.
